Pub Crawl 2001

Note the change of venue - we are back in Shadyside this year!

The first month at CMU is a very important time for CS PhD students. Important decisions such as choosing an advisors and research area must be made and classes chosen to name a few. But, more important than all of this, it's time to learn where some of the bars are!

Now, for the good stuff:

Who: All CS students that are at least 21 years old and want to go see a few of the pubs around Pittsburgh.
Where: Gather at the Newll Simon Hall Atrium
When: At 8 pm on Wednesday September 5th.
Why: Hey, why not?
And: Please bring $$$. (The department does not pay for this event.)
And a US driver's license or a passport to ensure that we don't have pesky problems.

This year we decided to take the pub crawl back to Shadyside. (The bars are a little eaiser to get to and a bit quieter so we can all get a chance to chat a bit more.) We will probably be visiting The Pittsburgh Deli Company, Docs, the Harris Grill and, of course the Sharp Edge!

If you want to join the tour while in progress you can call Chuck on his cell phone at 412-654-8451 or Nathaniel on his cell phone at 724-712-0608 to find out where we are.

Here is a web site with some more random information about some of the bars in Pittsburgh.

And some other stuff. Almost all of these bars have food - so you'll be able to grab dinner along th way if you want to. This is not going to be a tour of the clubs. Hopefully someone else will arrange an informal club outting. Also, this is not going to be a comprehensive tour of the interesting pubs. We'll definitely be missing some interesting brew pubs. (I'd recommend the Church Brew Works on Liberty ave for the ambiance and of course there's always Chiodo's and many more.)

(Last year the pub crawl was on the South Side (2) on East Carson Street. For future reference some interesting bars on the South Side are: Lava Lounge (2), Zythos (2), Fat Heads (2) and Dees (2).)

Getting There and Getting Home

We will either bus it there or get some scavenger hunt drivers to drive us. The "tour" itself will involve a fair bit of walking.

We'll of course be responsible for getting each other home. There should be one or more grad students bussing / walking to Squirrel Hill, Shadyside and campus. There may even be some rides available. There shouldn't be any problems getting home.

If you are worried about walking home alone, send me email with your address and I'll try to make sure that someone is heading that way.

Random Advice from Paul Bennett (a student)

"Btw, you may want to warn foreign students that if they have a birthdate day.month.year that can parse as a 21st birthday not yet come as month/day/year, they may want to either get some form of state ID or be prepared to put up with a few months of ignorant American bartenders that have never considered writing a date differently."
