Carol gained her Ph.D. in the field of Cultural Studies in Computer Science from the School of Computer Science (SCS), Carnegie Mellon University. She taught Cultural Studies in the English department, School of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS), for 4 years and also worked as a student academic advisor in H&SS. Prior to coming to the U.S. and transferring to Carnegie Mellon, Carol was a Ph.D. student in English at the University of London. She has a background in inner-city London high school teaching and in hospital teaching. One of her great professional pleasures was teaching at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital School (RNOH) just outside London, England.

Carol is married to Alan Frieze, Professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon. They have two adult children, son Adam (currently teaching in England) and daughter Nancy, son-in-law Joe, and grandbabies Maisie and Molly. The family also includes Max, a 4yr old Rottweiler/Shepherd + mix..
