The Greatly Misnamed Montezuma Castle

As a daytrip during our March 2002 visit to Phoeniz, AZ, we (Mom, Dad, Joanna, me & Aunt Cathy) drove up to the Grand Canyon. Along the way, however, we stopped at the misnamed Montezuma Castle, which is a very cool pueblo-like home carved out of a cliffside. It's misnamed because the original European settlers who found it incorrectly thought Montezuma must have used it as a hideaway castle, and the name stuck. Read the signs for more details.

The 'castle' itself.

The Lower Ruins and nearby Beaver Creek.

Some striking birds we happened to see in the parking lot.
