BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Barnabás Póczos is an Associate Professor in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on theoretical questions in statistics and their applications to machine learning. Currently, he is developing machine learning methods for automated scientific discovery and efficient data processing in applied sciences, including astrophysics, cosmology, computational biology, chemistry, and materials science. His work has been published in leading machine learning journals and conference proceedings, and he is the co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed papers. He has served as a PI or co-investigator on more than 30 federal and non-federal research grants. Dr.Póczos is a co-director of the Auton Lab and a recipient of the Yahoo! ACE Award. From 2020 to 2021, he was the Head of Statistical Machine Learning at D. E. Shaw & Co. From 2018 to 2019, he served as the Director of the Ph.D. Program in the Machine Learning Department at CMU. In 2001, he earned his M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Eotvos Lorand University, where he also obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2007. From 2007 to 2010, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Reinforcement Learning and Artificial Intelligence Group. He then moved to Pittsburgh, where he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Auton Lab from 2010 to 2012. Smiley face
