John Dick (footballer born 1876)	With the arrival of Percy Sands in 1903, Dick moved to right half, and continued to be an ever-present as Arsenal won promotion from the Second Division to the First Division in 1903-04.
John Hopoate	Signing for the newly formed Wests Tigers in 2000 Hopoate brought both talent and experience to his new club, however his fortunes on the field did not change and he could only find the try line a total of five times during the season.
Shaun Maloney	Maloney was in lethal form for Celtic in the 2005 -- 06 season, his annus mirabilis, after being moved from a striking position to the left of midfield by manager Gordon Strachan.
John Carew	Carew began the season as Villa's primary forward and was under high expectations from the Villa fans.
Tommy Thompson (footballer born 1938)	1967 -- 68 was Stan Mortensen's first full season in charge of Blackpool, after replacing Ron Suart two-thirds of the way through the previous term, and he gave twelve starts to Thompson, plus one appearance as substitute.
Andrea Lo Cicero	It came against England in 2000 when he had the difficult task of filling the gap left by the Azzurri prop and captain Massimo Cuttitta.
John Dick (footballer born 1876)	A strong muscular centre half (in those days the centre half played in midfield), Dick immediately made his debut for the Gunners on the first day of the season (against Luton Town on 3 September 1898), and he only missed four games of his first season.
Tommy Spurr	The 2006 -- 07 season saw Spurr hold down a regular place in the starting eleven at left back ahead of the more experienced Peter Gilbert and John Hills.
Andrew Cole	His first full season in 1995 -- 96 with Manchester United proved to be difficult, as Cole struggled to find his trademark form in a side now built around the much heralded return of Eric Cantona.
Gary Croft	6 million in 1996, brought to the club by Ray Harford, but although not usually a regular for the Rovers he would feature more under Roy Hodgson.
Marvin McCoy	In the 2010 -- 11 season, McCoy's breakthrough year, he helped Wanderers to promotion making the right back position his own, sending original starter Danny Foster to the bench.
Ben Davies (footballer born 1981)	In 2012 -- 13, Davies lost his place as a regular member of the matchday squad and was restricted to limited substitute appearances and games as an overage player in Derby's under-21 side.
Kenny Burns	He arrived at the Blues as a defender, but was converted to striker after Bob Latchford left in 1974, and earned the first of his 20 international cap s in that role soon afterwards.
Tim Sparv	He was named in the first team squad for 2006 -- 07 season and made numerous reserve team appearances but, as Southampton had a plethora of midfielders from which to choose, he was unable to break through into the first team itself.
Billy Twelvetrees	In the opening games of the 2010 -- 11 season, Leicester lost Toby Flood, Jeremy Staunton and George Ford to injury and Twelvetrees was again thrust into the starting line-up, this time at fly-half.
Wes Brown	After a year-long hiatus due to injury, Brown became a regular fixture in the first team from 2000 onwards.
Brian Saah	Despite starting as a central midfielder, Saah was converted to a central defender and won praise for his displays deputising for first team regulars John Mackie and Gabriel Zakuani during the 2005 -- 06 season.

Don Howe (footballer born 1917)	After World War II Howe returned to Bolton Wanderers and played the majority of his matches at Wing half, he also replaced the deceased Harry Goslin as captain of Bolton Wanderers, and was ever-present in the 1950 -- 51 season.
George Whitcombe	Following the death of manager Joe Schofield, Vale won promotion as the division's champions under Tom Morgan in 1929 -- 30 ; however Whitcombe made just the one appearance throughout the season.
Sean O'Neill (footballer)	He signed for Dungannon Swifts in the summer of 2010 as a replacement for Alvin Rouse, and established himself as first choice keeper, playing in 36 of 38 league games.
Willie Irvine	He retained his place in the team for the next two matches, before returning to his more preferred centre forward position for the 0 -- 3 loss at home to Liverpool on 14 April 1964.
Gary Sullivan (soccer)	Although he played in 16 games, Sullivan was used mostly as a substitute, at defender and occasionally forward, and only played 339 minutes in 2004.
Mehdi Mahdavikia	For the 2006 -- 07 Bundesliga season he has moved back to his natural position of right wing, in support of Center Midfielder Rafael van der Vaart.
Pablo Mills	He joined Rotherham United during the summer of 2006, adding strength to the centre of defence.
Linvoy Primus	Initially, Primus struggled to break into the team and had his progress hindered by injuries but the 2002 -- 03 season signalled a change in direction as Primus broke into the first team and won Portsmouth fan's player of the season as well as the PFA Fans' Player of the Year for his division.

Jack Fowler (footballer born 1899)	In the summer of 1923, Plymouth signed Percy Cherrett from Portsmouth and Fowler once again found himself second choice at centre forward, making only ten league appearances (scoring seven goals) in the 1923 -- 24 season.
David Bentley	The form of Aaron Lennon meant that Bentley was mostly used as a substitute for the start 2009 -- 10 season, although he did score a free kick in Tottenham's 9 -- 1 victory over Wigan Athletic, with the ball then going in off the back of Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.
Mika?l Silvestre	By the 2001 -- 02 season, however, Silvestre had established himself in defence ahead of the veteran Denis Irwin, and was proving to be adept both in defence and getting forward.

Liam Miller	New manager Colin Calderwood signed three new midfielders in January 2011 and left Miller out of the starting lineup for two games soon afterwards.
Paul Madeley	Revie signed Trevor Cherry as a replacement for Cooper in the summer of 1972, and Madeley moved across to the centre of defence for much of the next season as Jack Charlton's distinguished career at Leeds wound down.
Chris King (rugby union)	King again started the 2010 Super 14 season as the 3rd choice at prop for the Highlanders behind Mackintosh and Newland, but injury to Mackintosh saw him start the last 6 games of the season, his longest stretch of continuous starts in Super Rugby.
Joe Ledley	However, since the 2008 -- 09 season, he has been used more in the centre.
Robert Olejnik	Because of that, this led the club signing Scott Flinders from Crystal Palace and replacing Olejnik as a first choice goalkeeper until Olejnik made a return in goal in a 1 -- 1 draw against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on 12 November 2008 but the next game Olejnik once again replaced as a first choice goalkeeper in the next game and remained there since.
Lilian Laslandes	Bordeaux brought the striker back to the club at the beginning of the 2004 -- 05 season, at place where he had found glory earlier, but as he got older, he never found his old form, only scoring nine goals in 41 starts for the French side.

Brian Mooney	With a team consisting of Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Craig Johnston, Ronnie Whelan and the like coupled with the fact that they were at the time the top club side in Europe it became increasingly difficult for Mooney to make a breakthrough playing in the end just one first team game in a Football League Cup tie against Fulham in October 1986.
Shane Mumford	Shane Mumford dropped in form yet was still capable of holding his spot within the side.
Russell Coughlin	The following season, 1988 -- 89, Coughlin spent the majority of his games as strike partner to new signing Andy Garner.

Alessandro Calori	After two seasons with Pisa, in 1991 Calori joined Udinese, where he spent eight seasons, all as a regular, gaining reputation of a powerful, strong centre back.
Morten Gamst Pedersen	With new management under Paul Ince in 2008, Pedersen found himself in and out of the team, but when Ince was dismissed in December 2008 and Sam Allardyce was appointed Pedersen regained a regular starting position.
Anestis Argyriou	After many good performances in 2007 Argyriou signed for Super League team Panthrakikos being deployed as a right fullback or central defender.

Jones Chilengi	Chilengi first featured for Buffaloes in 1976 where he was mainly a reserve defender to the club's first choice central defensive pairing of Dick Chama and Robert Lutoba.
