SUMMER PLANS: I'll be sending out the normal form shortly so that you can let me know your summer plans. You should be discussing your summer plans with your faculty advisor NOW so there won't be any last-minute glitches. SUMMER STIPENDS: I know that many of you are planning to be away for the summer -- bringing in those big bucks -- so I thought I should remind you of our policy regarding summer stipends. 1. You should not receive pay from outside CMU for more than 3 summer months (unless you have received permission from the Associate Department Head to do outside consulting.) 2. You are paid by CMU through May 31, and pay in the fall resumes on September 1. You are expected to be in residence at CMU until May 31, and to return by the first day of classes which is August 25 this year. 3. Since fall pay does not begin until September 1, you are allowed to consider the period between Black Friday and May 31 as "vacation" time, and if you choose to leave during that period your stipend will not be reduced. (This is to make up for the week in August when you are expected to be here, but do not receive pay.) IN A NUTSHELL, if you leave after May 18, and return by September 1, you will receive your full stipend for the academic year. However, if your summer job begins before May 18, or extends past September 1, then we will pro-rate your May/September stipend to include only the dates you are actually at CMU. SUMMER JOBS AT CMU BUT NOT IN CSD: Students may accept summer employment, including teaching positions, in other departments of the university. However, if a student does accept another position, the stipend paid by the CS Department will be adjusted accordingly so that the total pay from all sources is no more than the normal CSD stipend amount. SUMMER JOBS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: F-1 students may work full-time at CMU during vacation periods such as summer without any special work authorization. Being out of the country for all or part of the period should not affect this. If you are an international student and need to apply for Curricular or Optional Practical Training to work outside CMU, let me know: 1. the exact dates you'll be away, 2. who you will be employed by, and 3. the date you plan to graduate and I'll complete the form for you to take to the Foreign Student Advisors.
