NEW HONORS/AWARDS...Peter Berkelman and Ralph Hollis have won the Best Video Award (!) at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, held in Detroit, May 12-17, for their video "Interacting with Simulated Environments using a Magnetic Levitation Haptic Interface."

IN DEFENSE...PETER BERKELMAN touches upon "Tool-Based Haptic Interaction with Dynamic Physical Simulations using Lorentz Magnetic Levitation" on Wednesday, June 2 at 10:00 am in Wean 4601. His thesis committee includes: Ralph Hollis (Chair), Pradeep Khosla, David Baraff (Pixar), and Robert Howe (Harvard).

PROPOSALS...ANDREW MOR slices into "Surgical Simulation Utilizing a Linear Model of Software Tissue, Object Modification, and Haptic Interaction" at his robotics proposal on Friday, May 28 at 10:00 am in Wean 4623. His committee includes: Takeo Kanade (Chair), Omar Ghattas, Branislav Jaramaz, and Sarah Gibson (Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratory).

YAPC99....What? "Yet Another Perl Conference" is coming to campus on Thursday and Friday, June 24-25. This "grassroots" program finds its origins in the "Perl Mongers" perl users groups, and is "organized by and for perl users." As an "inexpensive alternative" for devotees of perl, the conference is being organized locally by Kevin Lenzo. Larry Wall will open the conference, with additional presentations by Randal Schwarz, Joe Hall, Jon Orwant, Dick Hardt, Mark-Jason Dominus and others too numerous to list. Details can be found at www.cs.cmu.edu/~lenzo/yapc.

30TH CARNEGIE SYMPOSIUM ON COGNITION..."Cognition and Instruction: 25 Years of Progress" will be the focus of the June 11-13 Carnegie Symposium on Cognition. Organized by David Klahr and Sharon Carver, the program is sponsored by the Department of Psychology and supported by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. As noted, "in the 25 years since the 1975 Carnegie Symposium on Cognition and Instruction, reciprocal relationships have been forged between psychology and education, between research and practice, and between laboratory and classroom learning contexts...speakers will describe advances and challenges in four areas, including cognitive development and learning, teachers and teaching strategies, technology tools, and the social contexts of learning. Among the presenters are John Anderson, Ann Brown, Bennett Bertenthal, Sharon Carver, Robbie Case, Zhe Chen, Susan Chipman, Paul Cobb, Shari Ellis, Robert Glaser, Herbert Simon and others. Visit www.psy.cmu.edu/cognition+instruction/ for all agendas and registration information.

NEWS WORTHY...Paul Clements, Rick Kazman, and Len Bass of the SEI received a "Productivity Award" at the Software Development trade show and conference (SD'99) for their book "Software Architecture in Practice" (Addison-Wesley Longman). Software Development magazine, a sponsor of the conference, is one of the leading trade publications to explore "the products, practices, people management strategies and technologies concerning today's corporate software developer." Complete details on all awards, awardees and sponsors are available at: www.sdmagazine.com

COMING SOON..."The CALD Summer School: Data Mining and Machine Learning for Professionals" is scheduled for June 14-18. Registration must be received by Tuesday, June 1. For all particulars, contact Diane Stidle at diane@cs or visit www.cs.cmu.edu/~cald/summerschool/index.html.
