Commencement Ceremony/Diploma Ceremonies

The 101st Commencement Weekend at Carnegie Mellon University will take place May 16-17, 1998. To celebrate, the university has planned a weekend of activities for graduates, their families, and friends. A complete Commencement Guide with details on all events and important information will be forwarded in mid-March.

The Commencement Ceremony begins at 11:00 am, Sunday, 17 May in Gesling Stadium on the campus. The ceremony will be held rain or shine! You may wish to plan your clothing and footwear accordingly. We ask that guests do not wear spiked heels on the turf. No chewing gum, food or beverages (other than water) are permitted on the turf. No tickets are required for the ceremony. Seating for guests is available on a first-come, first-served basis in the family and friends seating area on the football field or in the stadium bleachers.

Graduates receive their diplomas at department ceremonies, which are held before of after the main ceremony on Sunday. Please refer to the list in your program guide for complete information on department events.

Shuttle service will be available Sunday afternoon from Forbes Avenue to off-campus parking lots and diploma cremony sites. If you prefer to drive or walk, directions of off-campus sites will be provided at the Family and Guest Information Area in the Connan Room, First Floor, University Center.


Travel Tips

Forbes Travel is the official travel agency for your transportation needs over commencement weekend. The agency has arranged special discounted fares with USAirways. Just mention that you are "attending Carnegie Mellon commencement." To make reservations call 1/800/433-8785 or fax 412/521-7848.

The Marriott City Center in downtown Pittsburgh will be the commencement host hotel. Rates are $92 single/double for acommodations scheduled from May 15-18. This rate includes two complimentary continental breakfast coupons per room for Saturday and Sunday. To make reservations call 412/471-4000 or toll free 1/888-456-6600, and mention that you are "attending Carnegie Mellon's commencement." Reservations must be made by May 1, 1998.

Alternatively, you may also wish to call the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh at 412/281-3700. Be sure to mention that you are "attending Carnegie Mellon's commencement." Reservations must be made by May 1, 1998.

Caps & Gowns: Faculty

RENT A CAP/GOWN: If faculty would like to rent a cap/gown/hood, please contact Carol Worek at the University Shoppe by FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 1998. She can also arrange for rental hoods from your phd-granting institution. Plan ahead or send the order form in the commencement guidebook to the University Shoppe as soon as possible.

With the exception of marshals and members of the platform group, faculty (or their home department) are responsible for the cost of their rental.

PURCHASE A CAP/GOWN: If faculty would to purchase your own cap/gown or to obtain a doctoral hood from your phd-grant instition, please contact Carol Worek at the University Shoppe by FRIDAY, MARCH 21, to assure sufficient time for shipping Gowns for purchase come in multiple fabric qualities and range from $95 (basic gown) to top of the line at $455 (full regalia with velvet chevron panels and trim). Caps and various berets are also available. Sample cloths and cap measuring tapes are available from Catherine (Wean Hall 4101).


Caps & Gowns: Students

Degree candidates must wear caps and gowns at commencements and diploma ceremonies. The university will provide graduates with rental caps and gowns at no additional cost. Graduates can either use the rented regalia provided by the university or purchase a cap and gown.

To receive rented academic regalia, you must complete the order form in the Commencement Guidebook (see page 13) and return it to the University Shoppe, University Center, by Friday, April 3. You can also use the order forms available in the University Shoppe, in student email, or on the senior bboards. The tassel on the cap is yours to keep. Rented caps and gowns must be returned to the site listed below immediately following the diploma ceremonies or by 4:00 pm the day after commencement. Please return them in the same carrying case that was used for distribution.

Caps and gowns are also available for purchase. There is a variety of styles and options. Purchase prices beginat $110. For further information on this option please contact Carol Worek at 412/268-6042 or stop by the University Shoppe in the University Center. Deadline to purchase a cap and gown is Monday, March 30.


Hoods for Master's & Doctor's Degree Candidates

Along with your rental or purchase of a cap and fown, deposits are required for hood rentals. The deposits are:

Master's Candidate Hood -- $70.00
Doctor's Candidate Hood -- $80.00

Hoods are reserved when you complete and return the academic regalia order form in the Commencement Guidebook (see page 13). Deposits are payable by cash, check or MC/VISA when you pick up your cap and gown. If you choose to keep the hood, your deposit covers the cost. If you return the hood with the rest of your rental, your deposit will be returned.

Please note that doctor's degree candidates are hooded on stage at the main ceremony and therefore will not receive their hood when they pick up the rest of their academic regalia.

All School of Computer Science graduates will process to Gesling Stadium.



Special Needs

Parking spaces for individuals with disabilities are available in all campus lots and on Frew Street.

On Sunday, May 17, the East Campus Garage first floor lot will be reserved entirely for parking for individuals with disabilities. Parking attendants will be available to direct you from Forbes Avenue.

There will be reserve seating on the football field designated for individuals with special needs. A sign language interpreter will be positioned in front of this reserved seating section. If you or your guests have concerns or specific requests, please call the Special Events Office at 412/268-5052 or visit the Family and Guest Information area at the Connan Room, first floor of the University Center, when you arrive on campus. Every effort will be made to accommodate your needs.


Last Minute HUB Needs

The HUB will be open commencement weekend to help you with any questions you might have regarding past due account collections, transcripts and diplomas, grade changes and transfer credit. The HUB is lsocated in the Warner Hall Concourse. Hours of operation will be Saturday, May 16 (10:00 am to 2:00 pm) and Sunday, May 17 (9:00 am to Noon).


Commencement Announcements

Personalized and general commencement announcements are available for purchase at the University Shope. Graduates can use the coupon provided in your Commencement Guidebook (page 8), to receive a free packet of five general announcements. Additional packets are available in the University Shoppe at $3.50 for a package of five.

Graduates can also order personalized commencement announcements, including your name, school, degree and graduation date, through the University Shoppe. The cost is $34.50 for 25 announcements. Orders can be placed with the sales associates in the University Shoppe or with an Art Carved representative by calling 1/800/278-7644. Please allow two weeks for delivery of personalized announcements. For additional information, call the University Shoppe at 412/268-2966.


Diploma Frames and Photographic Services

Diploma frames custom-made to fit your Carnegie Mellon diploma are available for purchase. They are nice and reasonably priced. A company representative will be available in the University Shoppe on Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17.

A photographer will be available in the McKenna/Peter/Wright Room, University Center (second floor) to take a complimentary photo proof of all graduates in their cap and gown. Proofs will be sent to your home for selection. Hours are:
