Current Classes
- Fall 2007: CMU/HCII 05-899/ 53-621 Design of Educational Games
The
potential of digital games to improve education is enormous. However,
it is a significant challenge to create a digital game that is both fun
and has predictable educational outcomes. In this new course students
will learn to meet this challenge. The course will involve a
significant hands-on portion in which students go through multiple
iterations of an educational game development process. They will also
read about game design, instructional design, learning and transfer,
and the educational effectiveness of digital games. The co-instructors
will be Vincent Aleven of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and Eben Myers
of the Entertainment Technology Center. The intended audience are
graduate students in HCII, CS, ETC, Design, and students interested in
education or psychology research.
- Spring 2008: 05-571 Undergraduate Project in HCI
Past Classes
- Fall 2006: CMU/HCII 05-832 Cognitive Modeling and Intelligent Tutoring Systems
This course addresses the use of cognitive psychology and
artificial intelligence to create computer-based "intelligent tutoring
systems". Students will learn data-driven and theoretical methods for
creating cognitive models of human problem solving. Such models have
been used to understand students’ learning processes and to create
educational software that has been demonstrated to dramatically enhance
student learning in domains like mathematics and computer programming.
In addition to discussion and readings on methods and models of problem
solving, learning, and tutor design, the course will have a substantial
“learning by doing” component. Students will be analysing data,
designing cognitive models and interfaces, and implementing an
intelligent tutoring system using CTAT, the Cognitive Tutor Authoring
Tools (see http://ctat.pact.cs.cmu.edu). Students should either have
programming skills or experience in the cognitive psychology of human
problem solving.
