Enhancing Student Learning Through Interactive Visual Representations

At first blush, modern interface technology offers seemingly endless possibilities to combine and integrate visual and verbal representations and information sources. However, it is not clear how to take advantage of these possibilities to enhance learning in a domain such as geometry, where learners must coordinate and integrate visual and verbal sources of information. In classroom experiments conducted in collaboration with Kirsten Butcher, a postdoc, we showed that geometry learning (with an automated tutor) is enhanced when learners work with an interactive geometry diagram. Thus, interactive learning environments in domains that require integration of visual and verbal information should include interactive visual elements.
