I have a couple of questions that I couldn't answer by looking at the FAQ or the documentation: Is it possible to read usenet news remotely via NNTP using messages? Is it possible to access AFS bboard and help files remotely in messages without running AFS locally? Can I make the messages program annotate mail messages that I replied to or forwarded, like in MH? Is there a way to specify something like "alternate mailboxes" in MH? In other words, messages sent to me@machine1, me@machine2, ..., should all show up as addressed to me. This might be related to the fact that I had to compile with RESOLVER_ENV undefined due to a problem with the header files in SunOS 4.1.3. How can I make the keyboard shortcuts show in up in the the menus like in the remote demo? How about making the menus 3d? Where is the undo function in ez? Is there a smart spaces feature in ez that ignores typing more than one space between words? For some reason, shell commands are invisible in typescript and show up after hitting return? This makes tcsh command-line editing impossible. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. If you have a machine which has access to the directories where the bboards are stored you should be able to set it up to run a messageserver process. Try turning off command line editing in your shell, typescript provides command line editing and with fcomp can also provide completion. (Though not command completion, it does do history completion and file completion, but being separate from the shell you must add some aliases to tell typescript about the shell's current woring directory.) Typescript is not a terminal emulator, just a command line interface to the shell. You may be happier with tm(an h19 emulator) in contrib/tm. -Rob Ryan Andrew Consortium Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 5904;andrew.cmu.edu;Robert Andrew Ryan Received: from atk.itc.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Thu, 2 Sep 1993 21:49:56 -0400 (EDT) Received: from atk.itc.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 2 Sep 1993 21:49:23 -0400 (EDT) Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.atk.itc.cmu.edu.rs.aix31 via MS.5.6.atk.itc.cmu.edu.rs_aix3; Thu, 2 Sep 1993 21:49:22 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: Date: Thu, 2 Sep 1993 21:49:22 -0400 (EDT) From: Robert Andrew Ryan To: Info-Andrew , Konstantin Laufer Subject: PS -- Re: Some questions by Andrew novice CC: Bulletin Board Administration In-Reply-To: References: Excerpts from internet.other.info-andrew: 2-Sep-93 Some questions by Andrew no.. I'm fairly sure that you can't. In order to prevent losing data in case writing the file fails the new file is written as filename.NEW and then moved over the old file. If you would like to make this behavior optional you can look at atk/support/buffer.c (or bufferlist.c I forget which). (and write over the file directly when environ_GetProfileSwitch("TakeRisksSavingFiles", FALSE) is true. That string does not occur in the file, I'm suggesting that it be added.) Ideally I suppose buffer, bufferlist and frame would be modified so that if creating filename.NEW failed they would put up a dialog asking the user whether to take the risk of saving the file directly over the old copy. The best course is probably to copy the file somewhere you do have search permission and edit it there, mv'ing it into the non-searchable directory when you're done. -Rob Ryan Andrew Consortium Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 5904;andrew.cmu.edu;Robert Andrew Ryan Received: from atk.itc.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Wed, 8 Sep 1993 11:56:54 -0400 (EDT) Received: from atk.itc.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Wed, 8 Sep 1993 11:56:03 -0400 (EDT) Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.atk.itc.cmu.edu.rs.aix31 via MS.5.6.atk.itc.cmu.edu.rs_aix3; Wed, 8 Sep 1993 11:56:03 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: Date: Wed, 8 Sep 1993 11:56:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Robert Andrew Ryan To: mcguire@animal.fnal.gov, Info-Andrew Subject: Re: question about andrew CC: Bulletin Board Administration In-Reply-To: <9309081341.AA25903@ animal.fnal.gov. animal.fnal.gov> References: <9309081341.AA25903@ animal.fnal.gov. animal.fnal.gov> Excerpts from internet.other.info-andrew: 8-Sep-93 question about andrew mcguire@animal.fnal.gov (760) > I am trying to build Andrew from the MIT X11 Release 5 distribution. > Is there a source for formatted documentation? Once you have the system up and running they can be converted to troff. (And from there to postscipt using groff, Adobe's Transcript, or psroff if you have the old CAT troff. See the FAQ document in the top level of the distribution.) Be sure you don't #define AFS_ENV in your site.h file. If you do, remove it and add #undef AFS_ENV. If AFS_ENV is not set in your site.h file, double check that the #defineAFS_ENV 1 in allsys.h is commented out. -Rob Ryan Andrew Consortium Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Wed, 8 Sep 1993 13:48:37 -0400 (EDT) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Wed, 8 Sep 1993 13:45:25 -0400 (EDT) Received: from maspar.MasPar.COM (maspar.MasPar.COM [192.84.231.1]) by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (8.5/8.5) with SMTP id NAA17842; Wed, 8 Sep 1993 13:45:21 -0400 Received: from armada by maspar.MasPar.COM (5.65/Ultrix3.0-C) id AA01074; Wed, 8 Sep 1993 10:46:35 -0700 Received: by armada.MasPar.Com (5.57/Ultrix2.0-B) id AA05246; Wed, 8 Sep 93 10:45:29 -0700 Received: by argosy.MasPar.COM (5.65/Ultrix2.4-C) id AA18861; Wed, 8 Sep 1993 10:45:28 -0700 From: knappe@MasPar.COM (Fairy Knappe) Message-Id: <9309081745.AA18861@argosy.MasPar.COM> Subject: Andrew File System Info To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Date: Wed, 8 Sep 93 10:45:28 PDT X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.2 PL8] I'm interested in more information on the Andrew File System (AFS).. - what systems is AFS currently available on - what may be involved in porting and supporting it to a unix-based system, - is it available on any MPP platforms - What are AFS's advantages over NFS Thank you for your response. I am new to the world of Andrew, and I am using the arbcon to create a simple application using an lset, buttons and a label. I have a couple of questions: 1. runadew allows me to run the application without all the ez extras. Is there any way I can run the application as a "true" stand alone application? 2. This question is related to 1. I do not wish the user to be able to modify the interface while it is running (i.e. moving lset "splits"). Can this be disabled, or should I be using another method to lay out the interface? 3. Is there an undo command? Thanking you in advance. -------------------------------------- Stuart Watt Flinders University of South Australia Phone: +61 8 201 3658 Email: watt@ist.flinders.edu.au -------------------------------------- Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 13;andrew.cmu.edu;Fred Hansen Received: from rascal.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Fri, 10 Sep 1993 11:25:57 -0400 (EDT) Received: from rascal.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Fri, 10 Sep 1993 11:23:53 -0400 (EDT) Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.rascal.andrew.cmu.edu.rs.aix31 via MS.5.6.rascal.andrew.cmu.edu.rs_aix3; Fri, 10 Sep 1993 11:23:52 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1993 11:23:52 -0400 (EDT) From: Fred Hansen X-Andrew-Message-Size: 943+0 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 If-Type-Unsupported: send To: Info-Andrew , Stuart Watt Subject: Re: lset's In-Reply-To: <199309101153.AA29428@karl.cs.flinders.edu.au> References: <199309101153.AA29428@karl.cs.flinders.edu.au> Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Mon, 13 Sep 1993 03:20:10 -0400 (EDT) Received: from po2.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Mon, 13 Sep 1993 03:16:34 -0400 (EDT) Received: from bull.it (minerva1_int.bull.it [192.90.1.2]) by po2.andrew.cmu.edu (8.5/8.5) with SMTP id DAA11878; Mon, 13 Sep 1993 03:16:20 -0400 Received: from achille.it12.bull.it (ettore.it12.bull.it) by minerva1.bull.it with SMTP (5.65c/MAGGIO-92) id AA06896; Mon, 13 Sep 93 09:15:11 +0200 Received-Date: Mon, 13 Sep 93 09:15:11 +0200 Received: by achille.it12.bull.it; Mon, 13 Sep 93 07:04:09 GMT (MET) Date: Mon, 13 Sep 93 07:04:09 GMT From: S.Scamuzzo@it12.bull.it (Scamuzzo Stefano) Message-Id: <9309130704.AA00608@achille.it12.bull.it> To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: line numbering in ez Cc: a.albini@it12.bull.it I find very practical writing c code using the ez editor. I'm going to tidy up the internals of the code and fix some of the bugs over the weekend, so I'll release an alpha/beta copy for people to play with on Monday.
