This seems to be because Andrew uses "PolyText8" X protocol requests to draw strings, and xterm uses "ImageText8" to draw strings. "PolyText8" is a much more general request than "ImageText8", and apparently underoptimized in the OW server. As far as I can see in traces of the typescript tool, Andrew doesn't use the more general facilities of the "PolyText8" request, and could use the simpler and more-likely-to-be-optimized "ImageText8" request instead. That is, Andrew seems only to draw one TEXTITEM at a time, they always seem to be strings (never offsets or fonts), and they always seem to use the same font. It would seem possible to change the call to XDrawString in atk/basics/x/xgraphic.c to a call to XDrawImageString, without disturbing anything. We'd still revert to XDrawText (and thus PolyText8), when drawing complicated fonts, but would win on drawing simple fixed-width fonts. Any quarrels with this analysis? It does not check to see if its argument is NULL, but it does check to see if the return value from malloc is NULL. (I know we ATK bozos ignore NULL malloc returns as a matter of policy. I'll probably still be feeling guilty about writing such code 20 years from now.) NewString should probably return NULL when given a NULL parameter. (Some might argue that NewString is like strlen and the behavior when passed NULL is undefined.) There is no equivalent to FreeString. The assumption is that free will do the job. I suppose one could argue against that approach. So why does everybody write their own version of NewString? Probably because few programmers know of NewString's existence. Also, it may have to be added to the globals table so it can be called from dynamically loaded code. There are occasions when I don't want to link against libutil.a because it has other grody stuff I don't want to link into my programs. Am I missing something? I would think that if AMS_MailCollectionCommand (and apparently PersonalMailCollectionCommand as well) is set, that the system shouldn't collect from /usr/spool/mail/joeuser *at all*. In ams/libs/ms/mungenew.c, I find: if (homeUsesAMSDelivery < 0) { char SpoolFileName[1 + MAXPATHLEN], *HomeBox, *SpoolFile; int numfound; /* Only convert /usr/spool/mail-type stuff if we're checking our person$ HomeBox = GetPersonalMailbox(); sprintf(SpoolFileName, "%s/Mailbox", home); if (strcmp(HomeBox, SourceDir) == 0 || strcmp(SpoolFileName, SourceDir)$ SpoolFile = getenv("MAIL"); if (SpoolFile == NULL || *SpoolFile == ' sprintf(SpoolFileName, "%s/%s", AMS_MailBoxPrefix, Me); else { strcpy(SpoolFileName, SpoolFile); } mserrcode = ConvertIncomingMail(SpoolFileName, SourceDir, &numfound$ if (mserrcode) return (mserrcode); } } if (PersonalMailCollectionCommand) { int syscode; syscode = system(PersonalMailCollectionCommand); if (syscode) { char ErrorText[100+MAXPATHLEN]; sprintf(ErrorText, "Personal mail collection command %s failed with$ NonfatalBizarreError(ErrorText); AMS_RETURN_ERRCODE(EMSBOGUS, EIN_SYSTEM, EVIA_PROCNEWMSGS); } } if (AMS_MailCollectionCommand) { int syscode; syscode = system(AMS_MailCollectionCommand); if (syscode) { char ErrorText[100+MAXPATHLEN]; sprintf(ErrorText, "System mail collection command %s failed with c$ NonfatalBizarreError(ErrorText); AMS_RETURN_ERRCODE(EMSBOGUS, EIN_SYSTEM, EVIA_PROCNEWMSGS); } } Shouldn't the initial conditional change from if (homeUsesAMSDelivery < 0) { to if (homeUsesAMSDelivery < 0 && ( ! (PersonalMailCollectionCommand || AMS_MailCollectionCommand) )) { Also, just what is "PersonalMailCollectionCommand" anyway? It seems to be redundant given AMS_MailCollectionCommand, and I haven't seen mention of it in any docs. The scenario is that I run Messages on my diskless workstation, and mail physically resides on another machine. I want to safely collect mail from my mailbox there into ~/Mailbox, rather than take the chance of AMS on my workstation and binmail on the server stomping on each other. The server's /usr/spool/mail is mounted on my workstation because I've just been taking the chance, and also so that I can use "from" and any of a variety of xbiffy programs. But even when I specify AMS_MailCollectionCommand, /usr/spool/mail/datri gets read and truncated before my MailCollectionCommand gets run, so the latter never actually gets to do its thing. The only way I see to work around this without changing the source and rebuilding (ugggh) is to not have /usr/spool/mail from the server pointed to by the local /usr/spool/mail, but that's ugly, and it really should work as I've described. But certainly your desire to not have it read from /usr/spool/mail/xxx is reasonable in the circumstances, and there should at least be a way to do it. Is there anyone out there who would be unhappy if the existence of a configured mail collection command meant that the automatic checking of /usr/spool/mail/xxx was turned off? BTW, the reason there's a personal mail collection command is that sometimes it makes sense for individuals to be able to customize this behavior. AMS_MailCollectionCommand, set in AndrewSetup, affects the whole site, while PersonalMailCollectionCommand is user-specific. The latter turns out to have been useful for some people at Bellcore who receive mail on one machine and read it on a workstation, because this is not the "universal" situation at Bellcore. (There is NO universal situation at Bellcore; we have the most fragmented system I've ever imagined...) Anyway, at the very least there should be an option to NOT check /usr/spool/mail/XXX to improve your situation, and possibly it should never be checked when one of the two mail collection commands is set. I have no strong opinion on that one, but other people might. -- Nathaniel Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po9.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-strip.dl) ID ; Mon, 10 Sep 90 12:30:45 -0400 (EDT) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Mon, 10 Sep 90 12:29:14 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: Received: from sun2.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id ; Mon, 10 Sep 90 12:07:27 EDT Received: from vax.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk by sun2.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk with SMTP inbound id aa01891; Mon, 10 Sep 90 11:43:09 +0000 Received: from ean-relay.ac.uk by vax.NSFnet-Relay.AC.UK via Ethernet with SMTP id aa03291; 10 Sep 90 12:05 BST Received: from bmads.ucl.ac.uk by Ean-Relay.AC.UK via Janet with NIFTP id aa04419; 10 Sep 90 13:35 BST Date: Mon, 10 Sep 90 12:40 BST From: Ian Rumford To: "info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu"@ean-relay.ac.uk Subject: Systems management Does Andrew have a systems management tools in the same vien as Athena's Moira? In-Reply-To: References: You can probably get the effect you desire in the headers only by either A) changing the code or B) doing some init file hacking. In the latter scenario, which is REALLY ugly, what you'd do would be to replace things like the "Reply to Sender" menu & keystrokes with compound commands that do the normal action and then add the header you want. I don't have an example of exactly what you want, but the following init file line sets up a custom menu that sets up a reply to the sender, fills in the body, and then actually sends off the mail and deletes the message you were reading. You might use at as a sort of perverse inspiration for doing what you want to do... # addmenu messages-compound-operation "Custom~99,On The List~11" messages messages inherit "messages-reply-to-sender; messages-sendmessage-compound sendmessage-insert-file /afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr2/nsb/.onthelisttext; messages-sendmessage-compound sendmessage-excerpt-body; messages-sendmessage-compound sendmessage-send-message; messages-delete-current" A third way to extend the system that wouldn't have to use this awful syntax would be to use Ness; I'm not sure how exactly, but I'm pretty sure it could be done. (Actually, it might be a lot easier with Ness, but I'm not a Ness expert.) As far as eatmail goes: What it does is convert mbox format files to separate files in a directory (~/Mailbox by default) for processing by AMS. So I doubt that it's what you want. For converting MH mail to AMS, I think you have the right idea -- CUI reconstruct is the way to go. The reconstruction might work better if you first type "create folder-name" to create the folder index and then "reconstruct folder-name" to fill it in properly. As for printscribe & console, well, I can't help much on those... We are a team from Computer and Communication Laboratory (CCL), a branch of Industry Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan, trying to push AMS in our local environment. We are in the infancy of the 1-year project and have some questions crucial to our success. We get the Andrew system in X11 r4 distribution tape and have not installed it yet. Our members have taken some time in looking over the directories and files. It turns out that the on-tape documentation is not complete. For instance, we lack the list of methods provided by the ATK. Moreover, most of the documents can't be printed before the system is setup. We are going to add a Chinese-text object to the ATK. Is the AMS good enough to automatically take advantage of the new object? Since 386 machines are much cheaper than SUNs, we believe 386/Unix based AMS is more affordable to our users. Is there a 386 version already available? Or we should do the porting ourselves. Which part(s) of the Andrew system is/are relevant to the porting? Any responses to the questions or comments to our project will be greatly appreciated. Even more appreciated is the hints to any traps or problems we can't foresee now. You can also get copies of my book about ATK from Prentice Hall. I believe that the curernt version of the Andrew distribution (patch level 6) includes support for 386 machines running Mach. Other variants of UNIX on the 386 might require some porting effort. For the most part, the parts of Andrew that need to be ported are quite localized, and the only thing that is at all challenging to port is the dynamic loader.
