Your top-level mail-handling function should return non-NIL without actually filing the message anywhere. When that function returns non-NIL, AMS figures that the function succeeded in whatever it was trying to do, and merrily deletes the message from the Mailbox. For this reason, you should also take pains to ensure that the function DOES return NIL when it fails. -- Bob Glickstein Z-Code Software Corp. 101 Rowland Way Suite 300 Novato, CA 94945 (415) 898-8649 Fax: (415) 898-8299 \enddata{text822, 17039} \begindata{text822, 19800} Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po2.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Thu, 5 May 1994 16:58:00 -0400 (EDT) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 5 May 1994 16:56:02 -0400 (EDT) Received: from Sun.COM (Sun.COM [192.9.9.1]) by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (8.6.7/8.6.6) with SMTP id QAA07289 for ; Thu, 5 May 1994 16:55:57 -0400 Received: from EBay.Sun.COM (female.EBay.Sun.COM) by Sun.COM (sun-barr.Sun.COM) id AA25353; Thu, 5 May 94 13:55:55 PDT Received: from phoinix.EBay.Sun.COM by EBay.Sun.COM (4.1(1/24/94)/SMI-4.1) id AA22148; Thu, 5 May 94 13:55:54 PDT Received: by phoinix.EBay.Sun.COM (5.0/SMI-SVR4) id AA02288; Thu, 5 May 1994 13:55:19 +0800 Date: Thu, 5 May 1994 13:55:19 +0800 From: Troy.Henry@EBay.Sun.COM (Troy Henry) Message-Id: <9405052055.AA02288@phoinix.EBay.Sun.COM> To: Info-Andrew@ANDREW.CMU.EDU Subject: info please X-Sun-Charset: US-ASCII Content-Length: 0 \enddata{text822, 19800} \begindata{text822, 21124} Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Thu, 5 May 1994 21:55:29 -0400 (EDT) Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 5 May 1994 21:54:50 -0400 (EDT) Received: from trillian.mr.net (dialip-2-l1.mr.net [198.174.9.21]) by andrew.cmu.edu (8.6.7/8.6.6) with SMTP id VAA21842 for ; Thu, 5 May 1994 21:54:44 -0400 Received: by trillian.mr.net (Linux Smail3.1.28.1 #1)id m0pzF9P-000O85C; Thu, 5 May 94 20:56 CDT Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.trillian.i386.Linux via MS.5.6.trillian.i386_Linux; Thu, 5 May 1994 20:56:27 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: Date: Thu, 5 May 1994 20:56:27 -0500 (CDT) From: Terry Gliedt X-Andrew-Message-Size: 1338+0 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 If-Type-Unsupported: send To: Info Andrew Subject: Re: Help needed with EZ CC: dfp10@csc.albany.edu \begindata{text,2008832} \textdsversion{12} \template{messages} > I am not sure what to do with auis62L0.lsm This is an announcement. It seems there is a change in the default behaviour in the latest version of AUIS (I suppose that's the whole point of new versions, after all :) Previously, a tab found to the left of the left margin would move the insertion point to the left margin. Nowadays, this is all ifdef'd around MEASURE_TABS_FROM_LM. So all of those documents/objects written with the idea that a tab will take you to the left margin are now broken. Admittedly, the "tab-to-lm" functionality may have been a slight hack, in that it's entire purpose in life was to provide the facility for producing bulleted lists and the like. However, without this functionality, I don't see how you can do a nicely lined up list with both bullets and text lined up. Any particular reason for the change in default behaviour? Is there a better way of doing lists? Nick Williams, Systems Architecture Research Centre, City University, London, EC1V 0HB. UK. This was announced in the December 1993 newsletter with the following cryptic comment: \quotation{\bold{ }\bold{Tab} stops are now measured from the beginning of each line, instead of the left margin. Justification/discussion available upon request. \ } The "justification" that came with the patch is this: \leftindent{Here's a patch to make tab stops be measured from the beginning of each line, instead of the left margin. \ Probably, somebody thought it would be important that the tabs were still in the same place on the wrapped portion of the line. My response is, "who cares?". If the line got wrapped, all the stuff they were trying to line up, using tabs, is trash ANYWAY... \ Why I think the tab stops OUGHT TO BE measured from the beginning of the line, and NOT the left margin: For C code, you want to change the amount by which wrapped lines are indented. Try it :-(. If your code has been indented using tab characters, those lines get jerked around strangely if you use any LeftMargin or Indent values other than those given by default. They look just fine AFTER the above patch is applied. You want some text, in paragraphs that wrap nicely, and you want it indented. You want a couple columns of simple values down the left side, one row per paragraph. It seems pretty intuitive, right? You just set the LeftMargin IN an inch, set the paragraph Indent back OUT an inch, and line those two columns up using 1/2-inch tab stops. WRONG! But it does work exactly that way AFTER the above patch has been applied. \ Judging by the code that the above patch #ifdef's out, somebody went to a lot of trouble to make tab stops be measured from the LeftMargin. I'd like to know why, or any other insights or different viewpoints anyone has to offer.} Apparently we need two forms of tab behavior, one for C code and one for bulleted lists. In the meantime, sites with documents that have the old tab behavior are well advised to have #define MEASURE_TABS_FROM_LM 1 in their site.h file. I'd like to know why, or any other insights or different viewpoints anyone has to offer.} Well, I was there :-) The justification was based purely on bulleted lists. In almost all typesetting systems, a bulleted list is laid out with some sort of symbol at the start and then a nice left-aligned column of text, all indented to an equal value. The indentation is no problem: just change the left margin. The way you get the bullet symbol in the right place is to change the first line's indent by a negative amount. The problem then, is in getting the first line of text (following the bullet symbol which has placed the "insertion point" left of the current margin) to line up with all of the following lines. Our "solution" was to insert a tab after the bullet and to force a tab left of the margin to take you to the left margin. I.e. measuring all tabs from the left margin. Seemed reasonable. Still does mostly. \quotation{Apparently we need two forms of tab behavior, one for C code and one for bulleted lists. } Nope, just need to fix the "measurement" code so that it will always measure in characters from the left of the screen if in TabsCharacters mode. Maybe. My context: I am still tinkering with my htmltext object (which now does inline images and looks much nicer :-), and of course HTML is just smattered with lists (of many different levels) all over the place. I'd like a nice solution to implementing lists, and the previous mechanism seemed ideal. This reminds me: is there any way of getting nice "bullet" symbols. The old gnucompat code worked by snarfing some mathematical character from the symbola font. Not too wonderful, as it was only at one fixed point size and was a completely different font to any that the user would likely be using (and hence change the line height). Purely for this reason, I switched to using "*" symbols. Ugly. However, they scale, etc. Anybody know of a nicer solution? This is a beta release of the version which will appear in the contrib section of X.V11R6. \ Please help us prepare for X.V11R6 by picking up and building this new release. We hope to clear up any problems so that the R6 release will build cleanly. Also, the following major changes have been introduced: \ Release 6.2.1: - New parsing code to avoid GPL restrictions on binary distributions of AUIS. - Compiles cleanly with the system C compiler under SunOS 4.1 and Solaris 2.3. Release 6.2.2: - NetBSD support integrated. - Linux support updated to use the latest version of the C library. - SunOS support updated for compiling with gcc under SunOS 4.1. (But not necessarily Solaris 2.3) - More robust handling of unknown insets. \ Upgrading to this release can be done either of two ways: 1. Two patches are available in the pub/AUIS/patches directory on ftp.andrew.cmu.edu (IP 128.2.232.154) that, when applied, will bring AUIS release 6.2 sources up to date with release 6.2.2. Read the README in the pub/AUIS/patches directory then use the following commands when applying the patches: \ patch -p < patch-6.2.1 patch -p < patch-6.2.2 Note: omitting the -p flag will cause the resulting sources to be inconsistent and unusable (broken!). \ 2. The directory pub/AUIS/dist-6.2 has 5 compressed tar files containing the sources for 6.2.2. See pub/AUIS/README for instructions on assembling the sources from the tar files. \ Kindly send your bug reports to info-andrew-bugs@andrew.cmu.edu. Technical questions or questions about using AUIS should be directed to the info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu distribution list, while general information can be obtained by sending mail to info-andrew-request@andrew.cmu.edu. \ Have fun, \ Susan Straub Andrew Consortium \enddata{text,2024216} \enddata{text822, 52124} \begindata{text822, 55201} Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po2.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Mon, 9 May 1994 10:30:50 -0400 (EDT) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Mon, 9 May 1994 10:30:05 -0400 (EDT) Received: from VNET.IBM.COM (vnet.ibm.com [192.239.48.4]) by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (8.6.7/8.6.6) with SMTP id KAA09124 for ; Mon, 9 May 1994 10:29:54 -0400 Received: from RCHLAND by VNET.IBM.COM (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 6485; Mon, 09 May 94 10:28:52 EDT Reply-To: "Todd Inglett" Received: by po1 (AIX 3.2/UCB 5.64/4.7) id for info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu; Mon, 9 May 1994 09:28:37 -0500 Received: via switchmail; Mon, 9 May 1994 09:28:37 -0500 (CDT) Received: from q.rchland.ibm.com via qmail ID ; Mon, 9 May 1994 09:28:31 -0500 (CDT) Received: from q.rchland.ibm.com via qmail ID ; Mon, 9 May 1994 09:28:27 -0500 (CDT) Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.q.rchland.ibm.com.rs.aix32 via MS.5.6.q.rchland.ibm.com.rs_aix32; Mon, 9 May 1994 09:28:25 -0500 (CDT) Message-Id: Date: Mon, 9 May 1994 09:28:25 -0500 (CDT) From: Todd Inglett X-Andrew-Message-Size: 1658+0 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 If-Type-Unsupported: send To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Re: Tabs and the left margin? I can't "just get rid of the first tab stop", as I don't know (and shouldn't need to!) where the current line start position is. } I don't completely understand the scenerio here, possibly because this all works for me :-). I think the secret that you are perhaps missing is that sub-lists should be left indented with a left indent style. For example, here is a nested list. \description{\symbola{7} This is an item that will wrap if you make the window narrow enough. Here is some extra text that is tabbed in to wrap with the previous item. \leftindent{1. This is left indented and it also will wrap if you make the window narrow enough. Here is some extra text that is tabbed in to wrap with the previous item. \leftindent{a. Another list. More additional text. b. Another list. } 2. This is left indented and it also will wrap if you make the window narrow enough. } \symbola{7} This is an item that will wrap if you make the window narrow enough. } The only places where I have used a \italic{single} tab is to begin the ``Here is some extra text'' paragraphs which are continuation paragraphs from a previous list item. Note that I don't need to use multiple tabs to make it work. There is a single description (i.e. list) style around this entire set of nested lists. I use left-indent styles for the inner lists. I guess you could make sublist and subsublist styles that simply indent the left margin. This assumes regular tabstops, though. -todd inglett \enddata{text,539016192} \enddata{text822, 55201} \begindata{text822, 59220} Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Mon, 9 May 1994 12:26:49 -0400 (EDT) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Mon, 9 May 1994 12:26:12 -0400 (EDT) Received: from VNET.IBM.COM (vnet.ibm.com [192.239.48.4]) by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (8.6.7/8.6.6) with SMTP id MAA16849 for ; Mon, 9 May 1994 12:26:05 -0400 Received: from RCHLAND by VNET.IBM.COM (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 8131; Mon, 09 May 94 12:25:05 EDT Reply-To: "Robert Kemmetmueller" Received: by po1 (AIX 3.2/UCB 5.64/4.7) id for info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu; Mon, 9 May 1994 11:23:27 -0500 Received: via switchmail; Mon, 9 May 1994 11:23:27 -0500 (CDT) Received: from coredump.rchland.ibm.com via qmail ID ; Mon, 9 May 1994 11:22:58 -0500 (CDT) Received: from coredump.rchland.ibm.com via qmail ID ; Mon, 9 May 1994 11:22:53 -0500 (CDT) Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.coredump.rchland.ibm.com.rs.aix32 via MS.5.6.coredump.rchland.ibm.com.rs_aix32; Mon, 9 May 1994 11:22:52 -0500 (CDT) Message-Id: Date: Mon, 9 May 1994 11:22:52 -0500 (CDT) From: Robert Kemmetmueller X-Andrew-Message-Size: 2559+5 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 If-Type-Unsupported: send To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Re: Tabs and the left margin? Stefan Gronemeier@troja. (191) > How can i have an overwrite-mode in the EZ editor? (i.e., the typed-in > characters should replace the chars at the caret instead of being inserted). Hmm. Apparently not implemented yet. An overwrite mode can be implemented by modifying textview_SelfInsertCmd in ANDREWSRC/atk/text/txtvcmod.c. The revised version would replace this inner loop for (i = 0; i < ct; i++) { text_InsertCharacters(d,pos++,&a,1); } with for (i = 0; i < ct; i++) { if (OverwriteMode) { text_ReplaceCharacters(d, pos++, 1, &a, 1); } else text_InsertCharacters(d, pos++, &a, 1); } You would then only have to implement commands to turn on and off the OverwriteMode flag. Sure cuts down on the band width. I am working on building version6.3 using gcc-2.5.8 on a SPARC10 running OS4.1.3. I've run into a few things you should be aware of: (0) using gcc The information in the README is not quite correct. In order to use gcc you must specify not only GCCLIB but also CC since CC=cc is the default. In addition you need to specify PICFLAG if you choose to use shared libraries [which is also the default for SUN systems]. (1) InstallShScript(file, dest) The meaning of "dest" seems to vary from one install-macro to the next. For this particular macro, "dest" is the full path name of destination file rather than the full path to its destination directory. For some of the other macros "dest" is the path to the destination directory. The current definition of InstallShScript adversely effects ./config/mkdirs ./overhead/mkparse I hacked the respective Imakefiles and moved on: config/mkdirs: --- Imakefile.dist Fri May 27 12:12:40 1994 +++ Imakefile Fri May 27 12:13:57 1994 @@ -34,7 +34,7 @@ InstallFileToFile(andrewos.h,${INSTINCFLAGS},${DESTDIR}/include/andrewos.h) InstallFileToFile(allsys.h,${INSTINCFLAGS},${DESTDIR}/include/allsys.h) InstallFileToFile(site.h,${INSTINCFLAGS},${DESTDIR}/include/site.h) -InstallShScript(mkdirs, $(DESTDIR)/config) +InstallShScript(mkdirs, $(DESTDIR)/config/mkdirs) install.time:: platform.tmp system.tmp @echo -n '' ./overhead/mkparse: --- Imakefile.dist Fri May 27 12:19:25 1994 +++ Imakefile Fri May 27 12:19:53 1994 @@ -7,7 +7,7 @@ OBJS=cparser.o LibraryTarget(libcparser.a, $(OBJS)) InstallLibrary(libcparser.a, $(DESTDIR)/lib) -InstallShScript(mkparser, $(DESTDIR)/bin) +InstallShScript(mkparser, $(DESTDIR)/bin/mkparser) InstallFile(cparser.h, $(INSTINCFLAGS), $(DESTDIR)/include) (2) config/andrew.rls There is a "#" missing from an "else" which causes all sorts of mischief on a SUN system that is *not* using OpenWindows: root@adam% diff -u andrew.rls.dist andrew.rls --- andrew.rls.dist Fri May 27 12:05:44 1994 +++ andrew.rls Fri May 27 13:20:53 1994 @@ -737,7 +737,7 @@ install.time:: fontname.fb @@\ $(RM) $(DESTDIR)/$(FONTDESTOPENWIN)/fontname.fb @@\ $(LN) `pwd`/fontname.fb $(DESTDIR)/$(FONTDESTOPENWIN)/fontname.fb -else +#else #define InstallOWFont(fontname) #endif #define InstallXFont(fontname) @@\ (3) overhead/image When using GCC, the ANSI_COMPILER flag should be set in the Imakefiles for both jpeg and tiff. Sacco@ssl.com (3741*) > In > addition you need to specify PICFLAG if you choose to use shared libraries > [which is also the default for SUN systems]. hmm? There is no choice, and you should NOT need to change the setting of the PICFLAG. PICFLAG should be empty on SunOS machines, except in overhead/class/lib and overhead/class/machdep/sun_sparc_41 where it is explicitly set correctly based on the setting of GNU_ENV. Could you let me know where and how it died? And send me your site.h and site.mcr files? Excerpts from internet.other.info-andrew: 27-May-94 building 6.3 Joseph E. Sacco@ssl.com (3741*) The meaning of "dest" seems to vary from one install-macro to the next. I suppose we should advise that users add #define BUILDANDREWINSTALL_ENV 1 to their site.h file on suns. We assume that the install program will install either a file to a specific filename or into a given directory. Excerpts from internet.other.info-andrew: 27-May-94 building 6.3 Joseph E. Sacco@ssl.com (3741*) > There is a "#" missing from an "else" which causes all sorts of mischief > on a SUN system that is *not* using OpenWindows: Right, but only if the unsupported LINKINSTALL_ENV option is defined. Hmm, the only problem I ran into was that building tiff died with an error from the assembler about a stack overflown. I ended up compiling the single file which got that error with cc. Excerpts from internet.other.info-andrew: 27-May-94 building 6.3 Joseph E. Sacco@ssl.com (3741*) > (4) GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE overflown when linking runapp > Hmm... back to the drawing board. Another person reported this to me recently, I can't see how it could happen. The latest version of the code compiles only a tiny section of the code in overhead/class with -pic (or -fpic). As I recall this error is exactly why we switched away from building everything pic. -Rob Ryan Andrew Consortium \enddata{text822, 133634} \begindata{text822, 137601} Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Sat, 28 May 1994 15:32:50 -0400 (EDT) Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Sat, 28 May 1994 15:32:45 -0400 (EDT) Received: from trillian.mr.net (dialip-2-l2.mr.net [198.174.9.22]) by andrew.cmu.edu (8.6.7/8.6.6) with SMTP id PAA05628 for ; Sat, 28 May 1994 15:32:08 -0400 Received: by trillian.mr.net (Linux Smail3.1.28.1 #1)id m0q7U9W-000O7IC; Sat, 28 May 94 14:34 CDT Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.trillian.i386.Linux via MS.5.6.trillian.i386_Linux; Sat, 28 May 1994 14:34:38 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: Date: Sat, 28 May 1994 14:34:38 -0500 (CDT) From: Terry Gliedt X-Andrew-Message-Size: 1976+0 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 If-Type-Unsupported: send To: Info Andrew Subject: New Linux Releases of AUIS \begindata{text,1870080} \textdsversion{12} \template{default} \define{itemize menu:[Region~4,Itemize~31] attr:[LeftMargin LeftMargin Inch 32768]} \define{enumerate menu:[Region~4,Enumerate~30] attr:[LeftMargin LeftMargin Inch 32768]} \define{programexample menu:[Region~4,ProgramExample~13] attr:[LeftMargin LeftMargin Inch 32768] attr:[Justification LeftJustified Point 0] attr:[FontFace FixedFace Int Set] attr:[FontFamily AndyType Int 0]} \define{excerptedcaption attr:[LeftMargin LeftMargin Inch 32768] attr:[RightMargin RightMargin Inch 32768] attr:[FontFace Bold Int Set] attr:[FontFace Italic Int Set]} \define{literal menu:[Region~4,Literal~62] attr:[Flags PassThru Int Set]} This is to announce that a complete, new series of packages of the \bold{Andrew User Interface System} (\bold{\italic{AUIS}}) have been made available for Linux. These are available via anonymous FTP from \italic{\bold{sunsite.unc.edu}}. After moving from pub/Linux/Incoming, the files will reside in \italic{\bold{pub/Linux/X11/andrew}}. This is a completely new release, based on AUIS 6.3 as it was just released to the X Consortium. The full source will be available with the contributed portion of X11R6. These packages \bold{REPLACE} all versions previously available at \italic{sunsite}. I have grouped the full 40MB of compiled programs and data into several logical "packages". These should run on most any reasonably current version of Linux (I used Slackware 1.2.0 with the 1.0 Linux kernel). The software has been configured for the relatively novice community. Things were a bit rushed as I gave the demo, but in the end everything went smoothly thanks to useful advice from Rob Ryan in particular (pointing me at ftp'able OpenWindows fonts) and others on this mailing list. The demo went very well, with quite a bit of interest generated in the htmltext editor and in the Andrew Toolkit in particular! So, again "Thanks!"
