We have only installed the ATK because we only want to use this component of the Andrew System. Our Installation is based on the /contrib of the X11R4 distribution and the ATK reports an `ATK 15.5` on every startup. 1) Within discussions on this list 'Version 5.0.0' has been mentioned a few times. Where can I get this new Version of Andrew (or only the ATK) and does it incorporate Motif support? We don't have the X11R5 distribution and I think we will use R4 for some more months. 2) The ATK Menu mechanisms are a subset of the Motif capabilities. We have an application which is designed to offer cascading menus, i.e. pulldown menus generated by selecting menu items. Andrew's popup menus do not offer such sub-menus. Is there any way to use cascading menus, maybe using the Motif-based Andrew? Otherwise we have to redesign our user interface, what we really don't like to do. 3) I tried using ATK applications with MacX and it worked fine, but I found no way to get the fonts right. The Andrew fonts come in fdb and snf formats, MacX wants them to be in bdf format. Is there a way to convert the Andrew fonts to bdf format? I appreciate any answer to these questions, especially number one and two. There are currently no plans to provide cascading menus, or a Motif-based version of ATK. 3) In the latest release there is a configuration option called FONTS_TO_BDF_ENV which will install the fonts as BDF instead of snf or pcf. -Rob Ryan Memember of Technical Staff, Andrew Toolkit Consortium p.s. (actually just installing a newer version) I have run into a problem, and was wondering if I could get some info to fix this problem. I have used the imakefile to make all of the makefiles. I then tried to use "make dependInstall" to install the new version: however, I ran across some "include" problems. The first error was with the file alquery.c: it needs acl.h. There were seven other files ( dot.h ) that it could not find. They were: prclient.h prerror.h venus.h cellconfig.h print.h prs.fg.h param.h I stoped the compile attempt here, so there may be more that it could not find. I have looked throught the entire system that I am currently on ( a sun os 4.1 ) and could not find prclient.h, so I assume that these are not system include files, but rather that they are andrew specific include files. So I went through the old andrew include directory, and could not find it there either. Did I miss a configuration? Am I missing some files when I got the source. In conversations with the Andrew folk, it seems that they do not quite regard either of those two pieces of behavior as bugs (though I agree completely with you). Of course, you can workaround the first problem by using "sendmessage" from a typescript or background menu, and the second by always using "Delete Window" rather than "Quit" (a particularly brain-damaged workaround, I always thought). I'm CC'ing this message to the Andrew list. Perhaps someone else has an idea. I think the party line around here at the moment is that you should look into switching from messages to a commercially supported multi-format mail reader, such as Poste or ZMail. Perhaps our Infrastructure Coordinator could provide a pointer? The monochrome handling of colour was definitely fixed; strange shadings appeared where none had gone before. However, with the new version, the fonts go wrong. On an NCD 100dpi (at least, fontwise) monochrome X-Terminal (X11r4), everything works fine until the patches are applied. After that, some characters are displayed incorrectly. Characters such as 'W' and the tick mark in messages are displayed one character too far too the right, and other characters are then overwritten on top of them. [ATK is running off a Solbourne running SunOS4.0 equivalent] This does not happen on and NCD 75dpi color screen. I have no idea why changing the color code should cause this effect, but it certainly seems to be causing some weirdness. Nick. Your suggestion, that I remove all of the menu options that launch sendmessage processes completely disables doing replies to existing messages, yes? That couldn't be further from what I want. The problem here is not that I, or the other Andrew users at this site, carelessly leave sendmessage windows lying about, it's that we'd like to be able to be composing replies to several messages at the same time. For example, say that I get a message that merit a reply that may take me several hours to compose; as I'm doing that, another message arrives that I can (and need to) whip off a one-sentence reply to. The current makeup of the system precludes this (unless I want to sacrifice the benefits of message addressing, automatic subject lines and the like). I don't know why the fix that was applied here at PARC (and I believe Bill submitted it to the Andrew maintainers), where multiple reply windows may be open simultaneously, is thought to be anything less that the obvious way that this aspect of the mail system should be implemented. There may be some underlying model of how people use mailers operating here, but it's not a model that reflects what the people I know actually do. Anyway, I just thought I'd throw in a bit of additional explanation here and point out that this work-around is hardly a solution. Thanks again for taking the time to reply to out earlier message. Type ^X2 in the MESSAGES window. (Gary mentioned doing this in the sendmessage window, which then doesn't get you reply-to behavior.) 2. Read the SECOND message you want to reply to in the NEW messages window. 3. Reply to it from there. Now you have two messages windows and two sendmessage windows, all in one process, and tied together in pairs. One interesting thing about Andrew is the way it uses the X protocol request X_PolyText8, rather than the overwhelmingly more common X_ImageText8 (xterm, xemacs, the Sun tools -- pretty much everything that doesn't do formatted text, I suspect). I've found a number of servers that have bugs in their X_PolyText8 implementation which just plain don't show up if people aren't using Andrew. It's fairly simple to write a small X test that puts up a window, then draws the same string on it in two different locations using both X_ImageText8 and X_PolyText8. You might want to try it. Since applying the xgraphic patches two days ago, several regular messages users reported that messages sometimes crashes when "Delete Window" is selected from a messages composition window. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem on demand, except under this (suspiciously) specific scenario: 1) compose a new message containing an X Window Dump raster inset 2) select "Negative" under the Raster Ops menu 2) select "Delete Window" This sequence of actions crashes the patched version of messages, but executes correctly in earlier versions. Not to open a can of worms, but the reason we were selecting "Negative" from Raster Ops is that messages *usually* transmits raster images as the inverse video of that displayed in the composition window. We recently built Andrew on an sgi4d70G running Irix4.0.1 and equipped with Transarc's AFS/NFS translator. We built Andrew using the same configuration files that we use with our AFS-environment platforms (suns, decs and ibms), with the one exception that AFS_ENV was undefined. That is, we built Andrew for the sgi with RUN_AMDS_ENV, AMS_DELIVERY_ENV, and WHITEPAGES_ENV defined, but AFS_ENV undefined. Messages, and its familiar components like queuemail and wp*, compiled and installed successfully. I'm wondering now what's *supposed* to happen when messages runs? Should queuemail still try to insert new messages into our AFS delivery system? Should we expect that addresses will be verified against our AFS White Pages database? As is, nothing much works on the sgi, except that old messages can be read from folders. Sending new messages results in an error indicating a problem with /etc/oldsendmail, and reading new mail gives a message that says, "Messages in .../Mailbox could not be properly read and delivered". Finally, "wpq user_name" returns the message, "B-tree: No such file or directory". Any advice on how we might use AMDS from an sgi to communicate with our other AFS-environment platforms would be greatly appreciated. With troff the pages used to come out vertically centered with the page number on top. But now the text is shifted towards the upper margin quite a bit and the page number does not show..Any suggestion ? my formatcommand: groff -Tps filename| printcommand: lpr My next question is about preview.. Earlier I used to have my format command as formatcommand:troff -Tps -t filename| printcommand:lpr -t When I chose preview the preview window would appear and die instantly.. Now with groff formatcommand the preview window appears and stays on the screen. But it is blank. And I noticed that it runs as preview -o filename.dvi in the background. the filename.dvi is created in the /tmp space. But it has a 0 byte size ??? So what kind of file preview is actually trying to show - dvi, troff ??? any help would be most appreciated.. thanks deeptendu -- ------ "Like a harsh neon streaking through the velvet darkness the whetted knife of Life tore its path through her Dreams" Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 01:53:36 -0500 (EST) Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 01:51:58 -0500 (EST) Received: from tigger.cs.adelaide.edu.au by po5.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew; Thu, 12 Mar 92 01:51:41 EST Received: from kanga.cs.adelaide.edu.au by tigger.cs.adelaide.edu.au with SMTP (5.64+1.3.1+0.50/UA-5.20) id AA08108; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 17:19:31 +1030 Received: by kanga.cs.adelaide.edu.au (5.64+1.3.1+0.50/SMI-4.1) id AA16290; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 17:17:46 +1030 Message-Id: <9203120647.AA16290@kanga.cs.adelaide.edu.au> To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Preferences Date: Thu, 12 Mar 92 17:17:46 +1030 From: Cameron Humphries One of our lecturers wants to project "table" and "ez" through an overhead projection system during 1st year lectures. Naturally I need to modify the preferences so that the windows use large fonts and nice colors. I have been mostly successful in my endevours however a few still elude me and no amount of RTFM'ing the preferences manual sheds any light. Thus I turn to the net: 1. The label in a dialog box (I have the buttons set up ok). 2. The cells inside table. I have set the bodyfontfamily preference but it still remains to small. I have set the bodyfont to "andy16" but this doesn't change the font size in the cells. 3. Foreground and Background colors I tried table.Foreground and table.foreground but this doesn't seem to do anything. The colors I want to use are valid since I can supply them on the command line without any problems. How, they have asked, could AMS, which handles many thousands of messages daily at many sites on many platforms, have had such a basic bug for so long? The answer is it didn't -- the bug is actually very obscure. The header in question was: From: sdonahue@pbs.org (Susan Donahue (10,000 Maniacs minus 1)) Contrary to what many of you assumed, the nested comments were NOT the problem -- AMS deals with those all the time. The bug I fixed would core dump ONLY when all of the following conditions (I think, roughly) were met: 1. There were nested comments in the From line. 2. There was no route-phrase preceding the address 3. The innermost comment had a comma 4. In the part of the innermost comment BEFORE the comma, there were no space characters AND no alphabetic characters. In other words, it was indeed a low-probability event. The bug in question is in the code that uses lots of heuristics to try to extract the real human name from the From field. I now believe that, successful though this algorithm often is, it was probably a mistake even to try such a thing. By the way, my fix just prevents a core dump -- it doesn't make AMS successfully pick out the name "Susan Donahue" from the above address. Instead, it decides that her real name is "10". So sue me. -- Nathaniel Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 1210;alw.nih.gov;Bob Dew Received: from kirin.dcrt.nih.gov via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 09:47:12 -0500 (EST) Received: from kirin.dcrt.nih.gov via qmail ID ; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 09:46:18 -0500 (EST) Received: from dude.dcrt.nih.gov via qmail ID ; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 09:44:21 -0500 (EST) Received: from dude.dcrt.nih.gov via qmail ID ; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 09:44:17 -0500 (EST) Received: from Messages.7.15.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.dude.dcrt.nih.gov.sun4.41 via MS.5.6.dude.dcrt.nih.gov.sun4_41; Thu, 12 Mar 1992 09:44:16 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <4djqt0_0ts4jA5CkVf@alw.nih.gov> Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1992 09:44:16 -0500 (EST) From: Bob_Dew@alw.nih.gov To: Info-Andrew Subject: xrdb conflict with .preferences Since installing Andrew Version 5 on SUN Sparc2s running 4.0.1 and MIT X11R4, we've had persistent problems with customizing messages fonts via .preferences configuration. Sometimes, fonts specified in .preferences would display correctly, sometimes a different font would appear, and sometimes graphical fonts, like snoopys and display terminals, would appear. We've discovered that the problem has to do with a conflict between xrdb (the X resource database manager) and font information contained within .preferences. While we enjoy the occasional snoopy displays, we've discovered that a way to eliminate the font problems was to merge the Andrew .preferences information in with that contained in the xrdb. Running "xrdb -m ~/.preferences" at startup clears up some very frustrating font-customization problems. Please send me private mail if that is the case... With no special information in preferences, messages uses a Times font (under an `andy'ish alias) for message bodies, but one that is smaller than I prefer. If I specify a font size of 14, the X11R5 server here manages to scale various fixed fonts to 14 points. If I then specify a scaleable font like `Utopia' for messages.FontFamily, something goes wrong: the correct behavior occurs in the message index pane, but the message body (and the composition window I am using now) ends up being some other font, probably andysans10b (which is actually a 12-point Adobe Helvetica Bold font, somewhat to my puzzlement). Even more frustrating is the fact that this does not happen every time I run messages; sometimes everything comes out just the way I want it. If this sounds familiar, I would certainly appreciate an explanation. Once I eradicated that particular > problem from our sources, we've had no further problems. Here's a patch > for the template file: Oddly, we've found that applying this patch doesn't affect font presentation on our systems (Sparc2s running 4.1.1 and X11R4). If we set "messages.FontSize: 14" in ~/.preferences, we can make 14 point fonts display, regardless of whether the patch is applied. We can also "fix" things so that only 12 point fonts appear in the messages body, again, regardless of whether or not the patch is applied. What makes the difference for us is whether or not .preferences is included as an X resource in our X resource database. Adding .preferences to the database makes fonts display correctly, and removing the information causes the unwanted 12 point fonts to appear. We've noticed that the font problem occurs only in Release 5--Patch Level 9 correctly displays fonts under all conditions. In that ANDREWDIR/lib/tpls/messages.tpl is identical in both Release 5 and Patch 9, I wonder whether the source of the font problem might lie somewhere else. However: if I type: on machine B: xhost + on machine A: setenv DISPLAY B.ecn.purdue.edu:0 on machine A: ez foo It will work. Both should work, why doesn't this work? 2) When I get into "ez" I have all of the fonts working ok. However, when I go to exit, the menu I get is static, or just blured letters. I'm trying to use ezprint to print this document with its table of contents. The contents surely exists because I can open a contents window and see that it is there. I can also see that the generated troff contains lots of lines similar to .IC 1 Title NO I examine tmac.atk and find that this should cause a table of contents to be printed. In fact I find that placing .TC at the end of my document (and using Format Note) causes the contents to print. I examine farther and find that .BT handles bottom traps. When the end macro (.EM) sets Tc=2, .BT sets Tc=3 and calls .TC. The trouble is, .TC in this context doesn't work. .tm call TC from bottom . TC .tm done I put .tm statements around the call to .TC in .BT and find that .TC doesn't complete. And this is where my troff skill runs out. I'm using groff: my format string is geqn -Tps /tmp/%s.n | groff -Tps | and this works well enough (except for no contents, of course). I also tried ezprint -t -c document | groff -Tps and of course got the same results. There was a time when this worked, and I got my table of contents. I do not know what happened to cause this: maybe switching to groff or trying to print during a full moon. At the campus we use the following platforms: - sun 3's (sunos 4.1) - sun 4's (sunos 4.1) - decstations (ultrix 4.2) - pc's - mac's The unix systems use the NFS filesystem. We came across the Andrew Toolkit, and we were very impressed. The intergration of several tools, multi-media in mail, uniform interface towards mail and bulletin board, availability of mac- and pc hosted messages clients, ....; it was exactly what we were looking for. However, the ATK seems very much dependant on the AFS, and we are very much dependant on NFS. We had some problems concerning the linker, because one class, boxview, included a header file which was modified by gcc (in comparison to the normal Sun includes) to use a gcc-specific library function. Since the gcc compiler is only used for compiling, not for linking, the Andrew class system doesn't know anything about the gcc library. We were able to modify the makedo shell script to include the gcc library. However, the doindex binary complained about the undefined symbol and we couldn't figure out how to modify doindex. The way we solved the problem was to remodify the modified header file (assert.h) so that the gcc-lib function (it's __eprintf) isn't used any more. Now there's the question, are there any experiences compiling ATK and ATK applications with gcc and is there any configuration option that allows adding libraries to the class system? Any help is greatly appreciated. First, applications (e.g., ez and messages) die on certain keystrokes in text windows, notably ^N, ^E, ^A. Messages dies when I select "Search Captions Forward" from the menu. Scrollbars seem to assume that fg is darker than bg. I always run the other way (fg lighter than bg) because it's easier on the eyes. The scrollbars come out inverted, i.e., raised where they should be recessed, and vice versa. I don't want to set my scrollbar colors in preferences, because I have things set up so that my applications come up in a different color each time, and I want my scrollbars to match. The 'tic' lines around my console clock are too long - they draw all over the face of the console (for a console worked correctly for the previous version of ATK). Does anyone have fixes for any of these problems?
