I'm trying to set up AMS here at my company, and I have a question about it. Right now, we are using the command "rn" to read our usenet messages. "Rn" requires that messages be in a directory tree rooted at /usr/spool/news/.... In this system, the bulletin board "comp.soft-sys.andrew" gets mapped to the directory /usr/spool/news/comp/soft-sys/andrew. My question is: Is there any way for AMS to run in the "rn" directory structure (possibly creating some AMS-specific index files or whatever), without replicating messages? Now I've got a situation where it is just flat out horrible, with no room for argument, and I'd like to plead for a change. We have a big timesharing system here that an increasing number of people are using via X terminals, many to run Andrew. Guess what? Using "help" in the obvious way, only one of them gets a help window. The rest of them are told that their help request is being sent to an existing window, leaving them to roam the hallways in search of their help. This is NOT considered a friendly thing for the help program to do! At the very least, this feature should be either sensitive to the DISPLAY variable (one help window per DISPLAY) or configurable so that you can turn it off via the AndrewSetup file. Right now, I have to tell everyone to use "help -new" which seems like a really ugly thing to do... Could this be fixed in a future patch? However, upon further reflection, I think I need to send more information about our configuration. The things are set up now, we don't have an internet connection. We dial up to uunet.uu.net for our outside mail, and dial up to a machine called "ole" to get our external bboard messages. The mail from uunet (as well as all internal mail) gets appended to a file on the user's home machine called "/usr/spool/mail/". The bboard messages get parcelled out to the directory structure described in my first post on the machine connected to the modem. Given all of the above, I guess my first question should have been: Is it possible to use the AMS under this configuration? If not, what do we need to change? (X11R4, Openwindows 2.0) So for I haven't had any luck. The first run ended in atkams with a segmentation violation and then a core dump. I've since tried rebuilding and everytime I do so, it reaches a certain point and just hangs without giving any sort of error message. The last time I ran it, it stopped after: cc -c -I. -I/home/andrew/include/ams -O -I/home/andrew/include/atk -I ...stuff deleted... text822.c /home/andrew/include/site.h: 3: DEFAULT_ANDREWDIR_ENV redefined /home/andrew/bin/makedo -d /home/andrew/lib -b /home/andrew/bin -o text822.dotext822.o Where I had done a make Clean and then a make World to get to this stage. The things that were set up different from the default are: DEFAULT_ANDREWDIR/ENV = /home/andrew AFSBASEDIR = /home/andy (but I don't believe this gets used) IMAKE =(X-tree)/config/imake XMAKEDEPEND = (X-Tree)/util/makedepend/makedepend RESOLVELIB = /usr/lib/libresolv.a (is this right? the file does exist, but I wasn't sure.) And I think that was it. Has anyone seen this problem and/or have a fix for it? Also, is there some sort of 'frequently asked questions list' that I should be looking in? If there is , could someone post me a copy? I only found this list yesterday. From: Jim Donahue Last week I tried installing the Andrew distribution from the X11R4 tapes. With only a little work, I was able to get ez, chart, bush, ... running. However, I have two problems that have me stumped: 1. I made and tried to run the amsdemo. It puts up a nice window announcing the Andrew Message System, displays a message that says something like "Initializing Andrew Message System...", waits about 30 seconds and then dies (the window disappears). I have set what I thought were an appropriate set of defaults in both AndrewSetup and preferences, but I get more or less the same behavior whatever I try. (I am not running AFS and have set the default to not use white pages.) Any simple things I can try to find out what's going on? 2. I can get a typescript window into which I can type. However, when I hit return after typing a command, nothing exciting happens. Indeed, the window behaves a lot like an emacs window -- when I type "^X-^C" the window vanishes. Another general question. I built the examples and they all seemed to build without difficulty. Now, what can I do with them? The documentation in the README files doesn't say much, and I haven't found anything in the help documentation that gives me any pointers. I know there must be a way to do this with embedded troff in ez, but I don't know enough troff (or how to embed it in ez).... What magic should I put in an ez document to get it to print the current date when I send the file to a printer? -Steve. Cc: Ned Freed , stef@ics.uci.edu References: <4214.677389369@nma.com> (This is sort of halfway between an Andrew and an nroff question, but I think it is of interest to Andrew users in general.) I've recently had need to convert an Andrew-format document to a plain text file for people to read all over the Internet, and the results are still slightly glitchy. I've figured out 2/3 of what I did wrong, but would like advice on the last point. First of all, I chose not to use the "ezview" program to simply strip out all formatting, the way the mail system does, because I wanted to end up with pagination, numbered page headings, table of contents, etc. So instead, I did the following: ezprint -c -t $1 | nroff -Tlpr The addition of the "-Tlpr" took care of most of my problems in the first pass, such as embedded escape characters and weird page lengths. However, I am left with one undesirable oddity: several things are underlined with the ^H_ convention, which is not what I would consider plain text. Does anyone know how to tell nroff not to do this? Thanks in advance. -- Nathaniel Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Thu, 20 Jun 91 11:34:12 -0400 (EDT) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 20 Jun 91 11:29:58 -0400 (EDT) Received: from thumper.bellcore.com by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew+; Thu, 20 Jun 91 11:29:52 EDT Received: from greenbush.bellcore.com by thumper.bellcore.com (4.1/4.7) id for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu; Thu, 20 Jun 91 11:29:51 EDT Received: by greenbush.bellcore.com (4.12/4.7) id for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu; Thu, 20 Jun 91 11:33:50 edt Received: from Messages.7.14.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.greenbush.mouseclub.sun4.40 via MS.5.6.greenbush.mouseclub.sun4_40; Thu, 20 Jun 1991 11:33:47 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: Date: Thu, 20 Jun 1991 11:33:47 -0400 (EDT) From: Nathaniel Borenstein To: info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Re: Andrew to text format -- help?
