Message-Id: <1991Jan8.052741.5984@eng.umd.edu> Sender: info-andrew-request@andrew.cmu.edu To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Well, considering that I am working on a Sun4 SunOS4.1, I took this long before actually deciding to attempt the compile, but now that I have decided to set forth into the wild wilderness, I have a couple of questions about some of the variable settings in the sitevars.h file: o for the _SITE_NON_ANDREW_MAIL variable, there is no single good setting for this on our system. We have many users, and about 3-4 different places to keep mail depending on which group the user falls into. But, we have the MAIL environment variable set at all times (or it is supposed to be). So, is there any way to get andrew to use the contents of $MAIL instead of whatever is set in _SITE_NON_ANDREW_MAIL ? o my other question was as to whether _SITE_NON_ANDREW_PRINTDIR would be funkified by mdqs-isms, but I suppose that that worst problem I'd have is that it won't find anything, and I don't think there's anyway for it to find jobs unless you're running on the printer's server. Oh well. Any help on this/these matters is appriciated, and any general Sun4 SunOS4.1 help as well. Thanks, and I'm sure I'll post more questions when I hit problems... - Chris Ross cross@eng.umd.edu -- Chris P. Ross University of Maryland, Engineering Dept. "What *am* I doing here?" We'd > be interested in any opinions or data on the pros and cons of this > approach. We use both MIT X and OpenWindows, we are heading to OpenWindows for the same reason that you are. We have had one major problem though with getting Andrew to work properly under OpenWindows. Note: we only have Andrew patched to No 6 due to the SunOS4.1 problems, even though No 9 is out we have updated the src yet. Also, our Andrew was still compiled under MIT X, not OpenWindows. The problem is related to fonts. Basically, the converted fonts don't behave exactly like they do under MIT X, it is something to do with their widths. The problem manifests itself if you run ez on a document, what happens is that you get places in the text where there should be a space, however the individual font characters come out too wide and the space doesn't show. Also if you select a region, the inverted area doesn't match exactly the area you selected, sometimes starting halfway through a character. I have mailed on the andrew mailing list about this before and received no replies from anyone giving either a solution or expressing that they have the same problem. It could be just that I am converting the fonts wrongly, but since I am the only one who has posted on the mailing list saying what I think you have to do to convert them, I don't know. I even ftp'd at one point the converted fonts that someone else had made available, however had exactly the same problem. On another point, I have also had trouble with Andrew fonts when converted to MacX. Basically fdbbdf doesn't put enough of the information expected by some conversion programs, in the bdf file it creates. This results in the conversion program failing for that font, or producing a font that doesn't work properly. Any help with these problems would be appreciated. I believe that I converted the fonts correctly but overlapping occurs. I had a thought that maybe the fonts are the correct size but that the character spacing and line spacing is different. One of them is for MS-Word. You could combine this converter with the EZ/ODIF converter (I suppose it will work). Anyway, we are also working in a new implementation of EZ/ODIF converter. In this moment, the only available converter we have for MS-Word is for release 4.0 on MS-DOS for the FOD-11 Document Application Profile (only text). However, we are working on more versions and more powerful DAPs. Apart from this, if you are interested in, we have ODIF converters for WordPerfect and WordStar (for FOD-26 DAP including graphics). As far as I now, Apple and Bull also have ODIF converters for MS-Word on Mac and MS-Windows. It appears the im_keyboardProcessor() never returns to application_Run(), but somehow exits deep in the bowels of ATK. It does exit with a bad status, though. This is a problem for me, because my application needs to do some cleanup regardless of how the application is terminated. I can live with people signaling it will odd signals, but it is real easy for someone to close an application with the mwm 'close' menu. Anyone have any workarounds? -todd inglett Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po10.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Fri, 18 Jan 91 16:55:15 -0500 (EST) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Fri, 18 Jan 91 16:54:09 -0500 (EST) Received: from iinus1.ibm.com by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew+; Fri, 18 Jan 91 16:53:59 EST Received: from RCHLAND by iinus1.ibm.com (IBM VM SMTP V2R1) with BSMTP id 1220; Fri, 18 Jan 91 16:56:23 EST Reply-To: "Dave Gross" Received: by po1.rchland.ibm.com (5.51/4.7) id for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu; Fri, 18 Jan 91 15:52:35 CST Received: via switchmail; Fri, 18 Jan 1991 15:52:33 -0600 (CST) Received: from amboy.rchland.ibm.com via qmail ID ; Fri, 18 Jan 1991 15:52:27 -0600 (CST) Received: from amboy.rchland.ibm.com via qmail ID ; Fri, 18 Jan 1991 15:52:21 -0600 (CST) Received: from Messages.7.14.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.amboy.rchland.ibm.com.rt.aos4 via MS.5.6.amboy.rchland.ibm.com.rt_aos4; Fri, 18 Jan 1991 15:52:20 -0600 (CST) Message-Id: Date: Fri, 18 Jan 1991 15:52:20 -0600 (CST) From: Dave Gross X-Andrew-Message-Size: 369+0 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 If-Type-Unsupported: send To: Info-Andrew Subject: Re: button sets In-Reply-To: References: <9101161502.AA01138@romaint.uucp> Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 91;andrew.cmu.edu;Tom Neuendorffer Received: from dublin.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Fri, 18 Jan 1991 17:20:44 -0500 (EST) Received: from dublin.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Fri, 18 Jan 1991 17:18:45 -0500 (EST) Received: from Messages.7.14.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.dublin.andrew.cmu.edu.rt.r3 via MS.5.6.dublin.andrew.cmu.edu.rt_r3; Fri, 18 Jan 1991 17:18:42 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <0bZrF2q00Vt1A5Klom@andrew.cmu.edu> Date: Fri, 18 Jan 1991 17:18:42 -0500 (EST) From: Tom Neuendorffer X-Andrew-Message-Size: 435+0 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 If-Type-Unsupported: send To: Info-Andrew , "Dave Gross" Subject: Re: button sets In-Reply-To: References: <9101161502.AA01138@romaint.uucp> Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po10.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Fri, 18 Jan 91 18:13:09 -0500 (EST) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Fri, 18 Jan 91 18:10:13 -0500 (EST) Received: from sun2.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew+; Fri, 18 Jan 91 18:10:06 EST Received: from vax.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk by sun2.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk with SMTP inbound id <16921-4@sun2.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk>; Fri, 18 Jan 1991 23:08:57 +0000 Received: from sun2.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk by vax.NSFnet-Relay.AC.UK via Janet with NIFTP id aa24851; 18 Jan 91 22:56 GMT Message-Id: <22871.9101182255@achilles.doc.ic.ac.uk> Received: from localhost by achilles.doc.ic.ac.uk; Fri, 18 Jan 91 22:55:45 GMT To: Dave Gross Cc: Info-Andrew , njw@doc.imperial.ac.uk Subject: Re: button sets In-Reply-To: Your message of Fri, 18 Jan 91 15:52:20 -0600. I didn't mean to be disparaging about general docs for andrew. I did, however, spend some time looking for a beast like it a while ago, and this coloured my comment. (As pointed out to me by Bill Cattey, my own documentation isn't the best in the world :-) But to better things.... I finally managed to ship across the latest ATK PL009 and it all compiled first time, from scratch, without any errors on a Sun4, running SunOS 4.1. Everything I have tested so far has worked perfectly, except for console, which core dumped on me after a short while. When I feel more energetic, I'll look into why. Thanks. Nick Williams. We are now seeing the same thing on our rs6000s running AIX3.1. ?QUESTION?: have the modifications suggested to me by Todd Inglett been incorporated in any of the patches??? I've enclosed Todd's comments below. Also, I've checked the tscript.c code and I didn't see any rs6000 or hp/ux ifdefs that would indicate that Todd's suggestions have been implemented. Do the Andrew folks recommend the modifications that Todd suggests? Also, what #define flags are used to specify the rs6000 arch. type? I've seen #define IBMR2 in our local config files. Cc: I am presently telling the AMS programs to verify user names via WP, which I assemble by hand (or at any rate, not manually). Recently, I found this problem when sending mail to a friend (and potential user) in CUI: I enter a To: address of tom.emerson. Upon submission, cui tells me The name 'Tom Emerson ' is ambiguous. It then lists my alternatives: "Tree,,," (others) Tom Emerson (staff) I, knowing Tree, direct CUI to send it to the second alternative. Wups! The name 'Tom Emerson ' is ambiguous. [and on it goes] Now since we don't run AMDS (and I'm not sure TPTB can ever be convinced to do so, unless I can solve problems like this before the Users find out about them), the only way to get out of this situation is to change the To: address to point to Tree on another machine. Now my question is: 1) Would AMDS do the same thing (AAAAUGH!)? 2) How can I solve this, preferably without deleting the other account manually from WP (or changing the nickname)? As a side issue, is it possible to get the WP-ized version of finger? -GAWollman Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po9.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Wed, 30 Jan 91 14:42:58 -0500 (EST) Received: from po2.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Wed, 30 Jan 91 14:36:28 -0500 (EST) Received: from ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU by po2.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew; Wed, 30 Jan 91 14:35:44 EST Received: by ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (5.63/1.42) id AA24267; Wed, 30 Jan 91 11:25:13 -0800 Received: from USENET by ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU with netnews for info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu (info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu) (contact usenet@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU if you have questions) Date: 30 Jan 91 19:02:58 GMT From: auspex!guy@uunet.uu.net (Guy Harris) Organization: Auspex Systems, Santa Clara Subject: Re: -iconic option Message-Id: <5601@auspex.auspex.com> References: , Sender: info-andrew-request@andrew.cmu.edu To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu >> One of the more useful things about it, from my perspective, is that >> it does not expose X overly much. There was a bug in the handling of large cuts&pastes due to not handling the ICCCM INCR property stuff correctly, but that got fixed in PL9; when I was doing the fix, I managed to do cuts and pastes between "ez", "textedit" (yes, that *is* an X application, now), and "xedit" - I did have to cook up some translations for "xedit", in order to get it to use the clipboard, but that was more of a problem for XView applications such as "textedit" rather than for Andrew. I do like the idea of having the icon title separate from the titlebar text (loosely coupled, I guess). At which point I get the following errors: doload: Undefined symbol: sys_errlist doload: Errors while processing doindex: NULL entrypoint from environ.do...program terminated! The build stops here and I can't figure out what is wrong. I've checked the 'overhead/class/machdep/dec_mips/...' stuff and find that 'getlist.awk' is asking for the definer of sys_errlist. I've checked my libc_G0.a (I'm on a MIPS system) and there is NO definer of sys_errlist. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Help would be much appreciated.
