Then each client would need to be modified to call these functions and do the right thing. For displaying decoded headers the clients would need to be modified anyway to deal with charset issues. Release 6.2 coming up in a couple of months should have some chance of working with some version of solaris 2.x. But there have been a number of bugs in the solaris dynamic loading which may prevent ATK from working under some versions. See the README.ez. (It may be somewhat out of date in the last public release, I'm not sure.) It can be obtained via anonymous ftp to emsworth.andrew.cmu.edu in the top level. It is possible to avoid compiling much of ATK my changing the site.h file, e.g.: #undef MK_BLD_BLKS #undef MK_BASIC_UTILS #undef MK_BASIC_INSETS #undef MK_HELP /* #undef MK_TEXT_EXT you probably actually do want MK_TEXT_EXT, this gets you the C editing modes along with other languages and the style editor lookz */ #undef MK_AUTHORING #undef MK_AUX_UTILS #undef MK_AUX_INSETS #undef MK_EXAMPLES #undef MK_METAMAIL #undef MK_JPEG #undef MK_TIFF #undef AMS_ENV #undef CONTRIB_ENV This should avoid compiling nearly everything which is optional. Date: Thu, 24 Feb 1994 22:22:37 +1100 From: Bob Smart I am trying to get the binary Linux version of Andrew going. I gather it is based on a beta version of 6.1. I have two problems with messages. Firstly when I start it it complains that it can't read ~/Mailbox. Secondly when I go to send a mail message it says the reciepient is not valid: even if the recipient is myself or root. I've tried setting all the AndrewSetup things that seem relevant and that are documented in the help. I can give more information to anyone who thinks they might be able to help. The Linux system is the debian beta distribution. The mail seems very simple and standard. I found a program called eatmail and it says "can't copy mail from /usr/spool/mail/smart to ~/Mailbox". I can't see why not. Another problem is that the "bigger" font is horrible and blocky and that probably means I need to get some extra font stuff from somewhere. Any advice appreciated .. I said I'd talk about Andrew at a local Linux meeting and I'd like to get the messages program going :-). We don't have a linux machine though so we can't test it ourselves. The latest sources should be released within a couple months. I can't find where this message is coming from in our eatmail.c. You shouldn't need eatmail, if AMS was compiled without RUN_AMDS_ENV defined messages should be able to read your mail in from /usr/spool/mail/smart. (Note though that it will read ALL your mail out of there and into an AMS mail folder.) Excerpts from internet.other.info-andrew: 24-Feb-94 messages problem on Linux v.. Bob Smart@mel.dit.csiro. You might be able to turn off font scaling in the X server. I suppose ATK could be hacked to provide a option to avoid using scaled fonts, but this would preclude using Type1 or Speedo fonts as well. -Rob Ryan Andrew Consortium \enddata{text822, 26017} \begindata{text822, 29021} Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 1210;alw.nih.gov;Bob Dew Received: from kirin.dcrt.nih.gov via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl@andrew.cmu.edu) ID ; Thu, 24 Feb 1994 11:52:47 -0500 (EST) Received: from kirin.dcrt.nih.gov via qmail ID ; Thu, 24 Feb 1994 11:52:39 -0500 (EST) If-Type-Unsupported: send Received: from kirin.dcrt.nih.gov via qmail ID ; Thu, 24 Feb 1994 11:50:31 -0500 (EST) Received: from dude.dcrt.nih.gov via qmail ID ; Thu, 24 Feb 1994 11:48:46 -0500 (EST) Received: from dude.dcrt.nih.gov via qmail ID ; Thu, 24 Feb 1994 11:48:41 -0500 (EST) Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.dude.dcrt.nih.gov.sun4c.411 via MS.5.6.dude.dcrt.nih.gov.sun4_41; Thu, 24 Feb 1994 11:48:41 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: Date: Thu, 24 Feb 1994 11:48:41 -0500 (EST) From: Bob Dew MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII To: Info-Andrew , Bob Smart Subject: Re: messages problem on Linux version of Andrew... (I co-authored the port to it.) The problem I had running SunOS binaries under Solaris 2.1 was that the binary compatibility library did not support the old SunOS libdl which dynamically loaded a.out format files. My guess is that the much touted improvements to binary compatibility under Solaris 2.3 don't include libdl with a.out. **ANY** use of ATK that requires dynamic object loading therefore fails. Someone said that AUIS version 6.2 will run under some versions of Solaris. Let me say what exactly the problem is: The libdl under Solaris 2.1 had a bug that broke dynamic loading for large applications like AUIS. That is fixed in Solaris 2.2 and later. Since you are running Solaris 2.3, I expect you will have ABSOLUTELY NO TROUBLE running the 6.2 version of AUIS. -wdc \enddata{text822, 33703} \begindata{text822, 35984} Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Sat, 26 Feb 1994 12:41:18 -0500 (EST) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Sat, 26 Feb 1994 12:39:38 -0500 (EST) Received: from vnet.IBM.COM (vnet.ibm.com [192.239.48.4]) by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (8.6.4/8.6.4) with SMTP id MAA04613 for ; Sat, 26 Feb 1994 12:39:34 -0500 Received: from RCHLAND by vnet.IBM.COM (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 7604; Sat, 26 Feb 94 12:36:33 EST Reply-To: "Todd Inglett" Received: by po1 (AIX 3.2/UCB 5.64/4.7) id for info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu; Sat, 26 Feb 1994 11:37:50 -0600 Received: via switchmail; Sat, 26 Feb 1994 11:37:50 -0600 (CST) Received: from q.rchland.ibm.com via qmail ID ; Sat, 26 Feb 1994 11:37:28 -0600 (CST) Received: from q.rchland.ibm.com via qmail ID ; Sat, 26 Feb 1994 11:37:26 -0600 (CST) Received: from Messages.8.5.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.q.rchland.ibm.com.rs.aix32 via MS.5.6.q.rchland.ibm.com.rs_aix32; Sat, 26 Feb 1994 11:37:26 -0600 (CST) Message-Id: <4hPsXKk91Iow5LaFxM@rchland.ibm.com> Date: Sat, 26 Feb 1994 11:37:26 -0600 (CST) From: Todd Inglett X-Andrew-Message-Size: 629+0 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 If-Type-Unsupported: send To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Messages options problem \begindata{text,538889728} \textdsversion{12} \template{messages} Has anyone ever encountered this weirdness? \excerptedcaption{Excerpts from mail: 24-Feb-94 ATK defaults Larry Jones (548+0)} \quotation{Todd, well I am pretty close to having AMS installed here in abs.endicott.ibm.com }\quotation{but one of the differences I am seeing between rochester and abs is the defaults }\quotation{which are enabled when I run messages.
