Has anyone else seen the following problem with messages? I have a lot of folders into which incoming mail is placed automatically by a flames program. Sometimes a folder will get 'sick'. When new mail is placed into it, 'messages' knows about it, but it will always position me at the first message in the folder, even though all the previous (hundreds) of messages have been read. Messages knows this too, because it shows check marks, rather than the little unopened envelope before each message. Sometimes a 'cui reconstruct' command seems to fix a folder for a while, sometimes it has no effect. This disease seems to spread, as more of my folders are catching it. Help! When new mail is placed into it, 'messages' knows about it, but it will always position me at the first message in the folder, even though all the previous (hundreds) of messages have been read. Messages knows this too, because it shows check marks, rather than the little unopened envelope before each message. The further problem is that to work properly these macros must insert postScript code at an arbitrary point in troff output. Some troffs have not had a good mechanism to do this interspersal and the method used for rasters is too buggy for printing color text. (If someone knows a general solution for interspersing postScript in troff output, I'd be delighted to hear of it.) Now, we haven't finished cleaning up our passwd database so for me ~ == /net/ra/ra/macdonal rather than /tilde/macdonal. The next time I fired up messages it proceded to write a new .AMS.prof using /tilde/macdonal/.MESSAGES/mail for mail. Unfortunately, MS_FindMailbox expands ~/Mailbox, CUI_CheckMailboxes wants .MESSAGES/mail and Mailbox to be in the same directory, and as far as strncmp() is concerned /net/ra/ra/macdonal != /tilde/macdonal. So, if you run into users who complain "Read Mail doesn't do anything!" Take a look at where their .AMS.prof thinks mail is vs. where ~/Mailbox is. CUI_CheckMailboxes will dutifully complain if MS_FindMailbox loses, but won't for this path conflict. Any ideas why not? Dale. Andrew Takats@zztop.roma (491) > Can anyone recommend an O-O development environment to use for porting > an ATK developed multi-media application to Motif? First, of course, is to point out that Andrew has adopted much of the Motif look and feel. But I take your note to mean you want to reimplement an application using the Motif library and want to avoid the pure C environment of Motif. There are three major contenders for object oriented programming in Unix: C++, Modula-3, and Objective C. Many sites are adopting C++, despite the advantages of Modula-3. Objective C has not been gaining ground despite its use on Next systems. I'm not aware of Motif libraries for any of these, but I suspect they exist. Among the advantages of Modula-3 is automatic storage management (via garbage collection), a feature capable of saving up to 25% of programmer time on sizeable O-O projects. At this writing a group (other than the Consortium) is building a layer on top of ATK so ATK objects can be accessed from Modula-3. Thus new code could be written in Modula-3 while utilizing the ATK core written in C. The ATK Consortium hopes to be able to make this code available later this year. (Consortium members will get it earlier than non-members.) I work pretty hard to keep things tuned so when we add a new hardware platform we don' consume space with redundant copies of doc files, etc. When the RS/6000 port came on-line, I hacked makedo.csh so that the .do files would be about the same size as those on the other platforms. Before my change, the .do files contained all the symbols, and were the traditional size of the .dog files. Well look at these numbers reported by du: rt/dlib/atk: 7299 rt/bin: 5676 vax/dlib/atk: 4914 vax/bin: 3714 rsaix/dlib/atk: 8961 rsaix/bin: 5828 sparcsun/dlib/atk: 26562 sparcsun/bin: 4207 All of these numbers make sense except for the sparcsun/dlib/atk size. (The RISC binaries are a little bigger, except where shared libraries render them smaller again.) My first idea was to, as with the RS/6000, strip the .do files. Alas, Sun strip is mondo stupid copared to AIX strip which has a PHD in symbol tables from Austin Texas. AIX strip is smart enough to reduce the symbol table size without destroying the data required to perform run-time loading. Sun stripped .do files provide me with the helpful Core Dump of EZ when run-time loaded. One possibility is for me to compile the Sun platform without -g. I am loathe to do this. I generally keep around the .dog files and use them for debugging. I distribut the .do files to campus, and the pedagogically correct way to do this all is for there to be separate .dog files. There is matte, there is button, there is elevator, there is dot, the bar itself, scroll etc..etc...And each of them have shadow, foreground,background... I tried MimicOld option that gave variable results. Everytime I start the app the bars look different..Boy! I need somebody to exactly describe to me what is what and which options should I set to make it look like the most simple scrollbar (a white slider on a grey bar, like xterms under twm) And for ITC people. It would be nice if you include a explanatory diagram of scrollbar in your scroll.help file.. I have been struggling with this problem so long that it is getting to me.. I've just put up release 5.0 under Openwindows 3.0. I had Andrew PL10 running before under Openwindows 3.0, so I'm just fighting the differences between PL10 and 5.0 (and maybe X11R4 to X11R5 changes). First, my fonts are a bit screwed up. I have /usr/andrew/xnwsfnts in my fontpath, so my cursors are right, but my Menus and Menubars have a tiny fixed width font in them and changing the requisite font preferences doesn't help. Also, the variable width fonts in messages, help, etc. all have a wide interline spacing that I don't like. Second, the new scrollbars look fine on my color display, but none too good on my monocrome display. Setting *.MimicOldScrollbar: TRUE doesn't help. I've included a raster picture that shows all of these problems below. It's the top of this sendmessage window. Has anyone out there solved these problems already? It seems to be caused by having an instance of the old pl7 messages running at the same time as you start the new 5.0.0 messages. Several people suggested that the problem might be caused by Foreground/Background color settings on the monochrome display, but this wasn't the case. I fixed the problem by setting "Scrollstyle: 3" explicitly. The documentation states that MimicOldScrollbar is true by default for monochrome screens. It also states that when this is true that Scrollstyle defaults to 3. I've found the latter statement to be untrue. Even with MimicOldScrollbar set to TRUE explicitly, my scrollbars are screwed up unless I also set Scrollstyle to 3. Can someone at ITC fix this or the documentation? Bill Schell bill@allegra.att.com AT&T Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ PS: The new scrollbars look great on a color screen, but ScrollStyle: 3 looks pretty plain. It would be nice if there was something prettier for monochrome displays. Hopefully, before long you will see a release of the fixed software. The symptom was that certain Messages preferences, including AMSHome, PersonalMailCollectionCommand, and others, were not being found if they appeared as "messages.AMSHome" in the preferences file. (They worked fine in the form "*.AMSHome".) The fix involves four lines in two files in andrew/atkams/messages/lib -- amsn.c and msgsa.c. "sendmessage" : "messages"); messagesapp_SetName(m, m->SendOnly ? "sendmessage" : "messages"); return(TRUE); } =================================================================== Here's a discussion of the bug, if you're interested: The preferences-reading code is in libutil.a, in a function called "getprofile" (which calls "GetConfig"). A global character buffer called ProgramName is exported by libutil, but most people don't know that. The environ ATK class is linked with libutil and has procedures for setting and getting the program name, corresponding directly to the ProgramName buffer in libutil. ATK applications use the environ_GetProfile* interface to the getprofile functions in libutil. So far, so good. The amsn class in Messages is also linked with libutil, as well as with libcui and libmssrv. Amsn calls CUI_Initialize, which calls MS_Initialize, which is in libmssrv, which calls getprofile, which is in libutil, and which requires the ProgramName buffer. So when amsn is linked, the .do file includes its own copy of the ProgramName buffer. When Messages is running, (at least) two of the classes that are loaded -- environ and amsn -- have their own copies of the ProgramName buffer. Messages calls im_SetProgramName, which calls environ_SetProgramName, which fills in environ's copy of ProgramName; and most of the preferences read during Messages' execution are read via the environ_GetProfile* interface. However, some preferences are read during startup by the code in libmssrv, which knows about amsn's (uninitialized) copy of ProgramName and not about environ's copy. So any preferences read by non-ATK code -- namely libmssrv (and others) -- will have a bogus value for ProgramName, and won't find "messages.foo". The workaround is simply to ensure that amsn's copy of ProgramName is initialized with the appropriate value, just as environ's copy is. ______________ _____________________________ Bob Glickstein | Internet: bobg@andrew.cmu.edu Andrew Toolkit Consortium | Bitnet: bobg%andrew@cmuccvma.bitnet Carnegie Mellon University | UUCP: ...!harvard!andrew.cmu.edu!bobg Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3890 | (412) 268-6743 | Atomic batteries to power... turbines to speed! If you're at the beginning of a line which is preceded by a hard line break. the right thing should happen. Right now, Messages wraps an "excerpt" style around each LINE of excerpted text, which produces the behavior you see. Using the style mechanism, the only way I could imagine to fix this would be to put a separate style around each CHARACTER, which would be incredibly wasteful (not to mention producing an exceedingly ugly datastream, which will matter more in Messages 8.X, where the datastream will be read by lots of non-Andrew software and occasionally even by human beings). An alternate approach would be to rebind all the text-insertion keys to do something different if they're in the middle of an excerpt. This could be done, but it would be a lot of work.... For now, I suggest using "plainest" to get your text out of the excerpt style. -- Nathaniel Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-nostrip.dl) ID ; Sun, 1 Mar 1992 17:29:03 -0500 (EST) Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Sun, 1 Mar 1992 17:25:15 -0500 (EST) Received: from ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU by po5.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew; Sun, 1 Mar 92 17:25:09 EST Received: by ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (5.63/1.43) id AA05074; Sun, 1 Mar 92 14:06:10 -0800 Received: from USENET by ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU with netnews for info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu (info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu) (contact usenet@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU if you have questions) Date: 16 Feb 92 19:09:38 GMT From: prism!gt0963d@gatech.edu (Deeptendu Majumder) Organization: The Dream Chasers Syndicate Subject: Re: Mono monitor Message-Id: <48936@hydra.gatech.EDU> References: <9202151819.AA24745@cad.gatech.edu> Sender: info-andrew-request@andrew.cmu.edu To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Well I have been trying to make the scroll bars look right on the monochrome monitor. There seem to be so many preferences related to scrollbar and I just cannot seem to get the right combination of black & white & foreground and background! Will please anybody tell me what are ALL the various components of the scrollbars and which options affect which parts. I have looked at the scroll.help file. It did not help. If I do not get help I have to give up on ATK I guess. thanks d -- ------ "Like a harsh neon streaking through the velvet darkness the whetted knife of Life tore its path through her Dreams"
