I've been unable to locate the Imakefile or template > responsible for this line. Any ideas? Well, I'm trying to build the same thing on my SPARCstation, and I haven't seen that problem at all. You might want to doublecheck your "site.h" and "site.mcr" files. I had a different problem when I omitted a trailing newline from the last line of my "site.mcr" file. My current problem is that "make World" always dies in atk/ness/doc where "nessrun" aborts with an illegal instruction exception. I've tried lots of combinations of compiler options, patched vs. unpatched sources, etc., and nothing seems to help. Has anyone seen anything similar? The problem does not seem to be specific to "nessrun", because if I pick up and continue building everything else with "make dependInstall", most of the other apps die with the same error. The only thing I've changed at all in the source distribution from the R4 tape is adding "site.h" and "site.mcr" files. (I'm quite sure of this, I even restored everything from tape to be sure I had clean sources -- unless the tape is mucked up.) My "site.h" and "site.mcr" files follow. I'm using Sun's cc compiler with no optimization, although I get the same behavior whether or not I use -O. --- site.mcr --- /* site.mcr file for ICASE Sun 4's */ XBASEDIR = /usr/icase/X11R4 CDEBUGFLAGS = -pipe XUTILDIR = $(XBASEDIR)/bin XINCDIR = $(XBASEDIR)/include/X11 XMKFONTDIR = $(XUTILDIR)/mkfontdir XLIBDIR = $(XBASEDIR)/lib XFC = $(XUTILDIR)/bdftosnf RESOLVLIB = /usr/lib/libresolv.a #define ConstructMFLAGS --- site.h --- /* site.h file for ICASE Sun 4's */ #define MK_BLD_BLKS 1 #define MK_BASIC_UTILS 1 #define MK_BASIC_INSETS 1 #define MK_HELP 1 #define MK_TEXT_EXT 1 #define MK_AUTHORING 1 #define MK_AUX_UTILS 1 #define MK_AUX_INSETS 1 #define MK_EXAMPLES 1 #undef LINKINSTALL_ENV /* Change this if we ever get ditroff! */ #undef DITROFF_ENV #undef DEFAULT_ANDREWDIR_ENV #define DEFAULT_ANDREWDIR_ENV /usr/icase/X11R4/andrew #undef DEFAULT_LOCALDIR_ENV #define DEFAULT_LOCALDIR_ENV /usr/icase/X11R4/andrew/local Tom Crockett ICASE Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering M.S. 132C e-mail: tom@icase.edu NASA Langley Research Center phone: (804) 864-2182 Hampton, VA 23665-5225 Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-strip.dl) ID ; Fri, 2 Feb 90 18:39:01 -0500 (EST) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Fri, 2 Feb 90 18:34:49 -0500 (EST) Received: from ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew; Fri, 2 Feb 90 18:33:26 EST Received: by ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (5.61/1.41) id AA01228; Fri, 2 Feb 90 15:25:58 -0800 Received: from USENET by ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU with netnews for info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu (info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu) (contact usenet@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU if you have questions) Date: 2 Feb 90 22:41:50 GMT From: auspex!guy@uunet.uu.net (Guy Harris) Organization: Auspex Systems, Santa Clara Subject: Re: rofftext...please be gentle with me Message-Id: <2885@auspex.auspex.com> References: <17108@ultima.cs.uts.oz>, Sender: info-andrew-request@andrew.cmu.edu To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu >There is now a toez command which converts Scribe or troff/nroff to ez. In fact, it probably *does* account for it, in combination with a "rofftext" bug. The document .de XX .de YY \.. .. .XX Hello, world when run with "rofftext" with no extra arguments (i.e., no "-ms") produces an empty document, with "Hello, world" nowhere in it. I think "rofftext" can't cope with macros that define macros, as "XX" does there, and as do several macros in the SunOS 4.0.3 "-ms" macro package (and perhaps in other variants of "-ms" as well). Anyway, DEC gave them the sources to libc and Sohan and I managed to get them compiled so everything worked. Basiaclly, you need to compile all of libc with the -G 0 switch. You also need a -G 0 libm.a. I used sources off of uunet to do that. Sun does that all of the time since their libraries are, typically, out of date with respect to standard ARPA services. The problem with compiling Berkeley sources is that there is assembly language code for some of the most commonly used routines. Once *could* simply extract those from the distributed archive and compile the rest with -G 0. I dunno if the problem would not occur if the GNU C compiler were used. My guess is that my problem is an oracle bug, but nsb said that he remembered seeing something similar on the net at one time, so here goes... I have an application that uses the Oracle relational database system and also uses ATK for a front end. Recently we upgraded from V5 Oracle to V6. At the same time we upgraded to the latest release of X and Andrew. Now when I try to link everything together (either by making multiple calls to ld and then calling makedo or by calling makedo with my object and all the necessary libraries) I get an error of an undefined symbol "uname". I called Oracle and they told me that Oracle V6 is System5 cc-compatible and that I should include a System5 libc.a at the end of my list of libraries. I make the change and then dofix gives me an undefined symbol of "end". Using the System5 c compiler produces the same result. Does this sound vaguely familiar to anyone? Is it possible that the problem lies in the Oracle libs which were undoubtedly compiled with Sys5 cc? Because of this I have set the AMS_UsersHandleFormatting to 'no', meaning that whenever anyone sends a message with formatting to someone in the local domain they are asked if they wish to send with formatting etc. Now I can make things better by using the $forceformat option in individuals .AMS_aliases files so that if they do send formatted mail to Andrew users then they don't get asked about formatting etc. The problem with this is that each person has their own list of who is currently using Andrew, meaning that if someone else starts using Andrew it has to be added to each individuals aliases file. My question is, can I have a system wide AMS aliases file which I can put $forceformat lines in for each user using Andrew, and then have this included in individuals aliases files using and include statement or for messages to check it directly. I have looked in various help files but didn't find anything which helped to answer this. Also we are having trouble getting people to use AMS, currently they use the MH mail system and a number of users are worried about the fact that once mail is read into AMS its name gets munged and its not easy to get it back out into MH. I know about cui and that it could be used as a replacement for MH on tty terminals but it is no where near as easier to use as MH or vmail which runs on top of MH. Is there a way which AMS can look at the same files as MH, not munge names and use its files for keeping track of which items have been read etc. Graham Dumpleton (grahamd@otc.otca.oz.au) Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-strip.dl) ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 12:37:50 -0500 (EST) Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 12:34:04 -0500 (EST) If-Type-Unsupported: alter Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 12:33:13 -0500 (EST) Received: from apollo.transarc.com by andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew+; Thu, 8 Feb 90 12:32:06 EST Received: by apollo.transarc.com (5.57/Ultrix3.0-C) id AA10055; Thu, 8 Feb 90 12:30:47 EST Received: from Messages.7.8.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.apollo.transarc.com.pmax.3 via MS.5.6.apollo.transarc.com.pmax_3; Thu, 8 Feb 90 12:30:45 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: Date: Thu, 8 Feb 90 12:30:45 -0500 (EST) From: Craig_Everhart@transarc.com X-Andrew-Message-Size: 2094+0 Content-Type: X-BE2; 12 Reply-To: Craig_Everhart@transarc.com To: Info-Andrew Subject: Re: System wide AMS alias file In-Reply-To: <4Zo_g7K6bk8nE=ZEhA@otc.otca.oz> References: <4Zo_g7K6bk8nE=ZEhA@otc.otca.oz> Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-strip.dl) ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 15:19:45 -0500 (EST) Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 15:16:19 -0500 (EST) Received: from po2.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 07:36:34 -0500 (EST) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 07:35:29 -0500 (EST) Received: from sparc01.icase.edu ([192.42.142.50]) by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew; Thu, 8 Feb 90 07:35:15 EST Received: by sparc01.icase.edu (4.0/SMI-DDN) id AA06903; Thu, 8 Feb 90 07:32:40 EST Received: from Version.6.23.N.CUILIB.3.44.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.sparc01.Unknown.Machine.Type via MS.5.5.sparc01.sun4_40; Thu, 8 Feb 90 07:32:38 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: Date: Thu, 8 Feb 90 07:32:38 -0500 (EST) From: Tom Crockett To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Re: System wide AMS alias file In-Reply-To: <4Zo_g7K6bk8nE=ZEhA@otc.otca.oz> References: <4Zo_g7K6bk8nE=ZEhA@otc.otca.oz> > *Excerpts from info-andrew: 8-Feb-90 System wide AMS alias file Graham* > *Dumpleton@uunet.u (1709)* > My question is, can I have a system wide AMS aliases file which I > can put $forceformat lines in for each user using Andrew, and then have > this included in individuals aliases files using and include statement > or for messages to check it directly. Our environment sounds a lot like yours. We would also be interested in a site-wide .AMS_aliases file which would be scanned along with that of individual users. _Tom Crockett_ *ICASE* Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering M.S. 132C e-mail: tom@icase.edu NASA Langley Research Center phone: (804) 864-2182 Hampton, VA 23665-5225 Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-strip.dl) ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 17:44:51 -0500 (EST) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 17:39:27 -0500 (EST) Received: from po5.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 10:39:50 -0500 (EST) Received: from po3.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 10:38:07 -0500 (EST) Received: from thumper.bellcore.com by po3.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id for info-andrew; Thu, 8 Feb 90 10:37:19 EST Received: by thumper.bellcore.com (5.54/4.7) id AA19814; Thu, 8 Feb 90 10:35:40 EST Received: by greenbush.bellcore.com (4.12/4.7) id AA09562; Thu, 8 Feb 90 10:36:42 est Received: from Messages.7.14.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.greenbush.sins.sun4.40 via MS.5.6.greenbush.sins.sun4_40; Thu, 8 Feb 90 10:36:39 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: Date: Thu, 8 Feb 90 10:36:39 -0500 (EST) From: Nathaniel Borenstein To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Re: System wide AMS alias file In-Reply-To: <4Zo_g7K6bk8nE=ZEhA@otc.otca.oz> References: <4Zo_g7K6bk8nE=ZEhA@otc.otca.oz> There's not currently a system-wide alias file, but I too have come to realize (since leaving the more homogeneous CMU environment) that it would be a very useful thing to have, for precisely the reason you mentioned. It should be pretty easy; at some point, I might even do it and send CMU a patch. As for the MH compatibility question -- there is a feature in AMS (the "alien tree" feature) that was designed for AMS/MH/Netnews interoperability, but it has not been heavily used, and probably can be counted on to be a little buggy. I'm not sure if it is documented at all, but I know a few people have tried it. Perhaps one of them can comment on whether it works, and how well. -- Nathaniel Return-path: X-Andrew-Authenticated-as: 0;andrew.cmu.edu;Network-Mail Received: from andrew.cmu.edu via trymail for info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu (->+dist+/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/ak99/dists/info-andrew-strip.dl) ID ; Fri, 9 Feb 90 08:55:22 -0500 (EST) Received: from po2.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Fri, 9 Feb 90 08:51:58 -0500 (EST) Received: from arisia.Xerox.COM by po2.andrew.cmu.edu (5.54/3.15) id ; Thu, 8 Feb 90 20:31:19 EST Received: from holmes.parc.Xerox.COM by arisia.Xerox.COM with SMTP (5.61+/IDA-1.2.8/gandalf) id AA02111; Thu, 8 Feb 90 17:28:48 -0800 Received: by holmes.parc.xerox.com (5.61+/IDA-1.2.8/gandalf) id AA03600; Thu, 8 Feb 90 17:28:41 PST Received: from Messages.7.14.N.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.holmes.PARC.sun4.40 via MS.5.6.holmes.PARC.sun4_40; Thu, 8 Feb 90 17:28:40 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: Date: Thu, 8 Feb 90 17:28:40 -0800 (PST) From: Bill Janssen Enclosure: ---- Enclosure ---- To: Info-Andrew , Craig_Everhart@transarc.com Subject: Re: System wide AMS alias file In-Reply-To: References: <4Zo_g7K6bk8nE=ZEhA@otc.otca.oz>, For those of us who have users with GNU Emacs "rmail" bound to their brains, here's an elisp function to display an ATK mail message from rmail: ---- Enclosure ---- (defun rmail-show-message-as-andrew-object () "View andrew mail message from RMAIL" (interactive) (if (or (eq window-system 'x) (getenv "DISPLAY")) (let (from to date subject body body-begin msg-end) (save-excursion (save-restriction (setq msg-end (rmail-msgend rmail-current-message)) (widen) (goto-char (rmail-msgbeg rmail-current-message)) (forward-line 1) (narrow-to-region (if (= (following-char) ?0) (progn
