Hi,

I want to use atk applications on a 1bit display and get almost
unreadable windows. ez, help, .... are painting patterns in the
background, which makes it inpossible to read the text. The patterns
are not always the same, but change from one call to the other......
using commandline flags: -fg black -bg white makes it even worse.

Any idea?

If you get weird background patterns changing from one call to another,
you probably forgot to install the fonts properly. Check your installation,
your server's font path and try again. I use a monochrome display and
everything works fine (although the scrollbars look *much* nicer when
displayed in colour mode...).

I have written an inset where the dataobject is a subclass of \italic{text},
and the view is not a subclass of \italic{textview}, but includes a
\italic{textview} in part of its visual rectangle.  My problem is that I'd
like to control the foreground and background colors of the
sub-\italic{textview} independent of the overall window.  Is there some way to
do this?


I tried changing colors by calling \bold{graphic_SetDefaultColors()} just
before creating the \italic{textview}, then restoring them just afterwards,
but this had no effect.  I have had success with this in the past when
creating an entirely new window in the same process with \bold{im_Create()}.


Stated another way, what I'm looking for is something like
\bold{graphic_SetDefaultColors()} which is a method rather a class procedure
(which is what it is now).


Any thoughts?

If you have a way to print troff then you should be able to print text and 
styled text, but not figures, zips, or rasters.


If you currently don't have a way to print troff, you may be interested in 
psroff (latest version 3.0 or so), or groff (latest version groff-1.06).  Both 
support a variety of non-postscript printers.  Or if you would like to be able 
to print Postscript (and ATK figures, zips and rasters) but can't get a 
postscript printer you might be interested in Ghostscript (latest version 
2.5.2 or 2.5.3 I believe.)  Ghostscript is a Postscript interpretter and 
renderer which can output to several types of printers.


I recently posted the references for the packages mention above, if you like 
me to resend that to you just let me know.

Actually, my example doesn't quite speak to the problem at hand.  The solution 
is similar though...  In the class which includes the textview, override 
LinkTree.  Then use a LinkTree function similar to the example, only before 
the check for the IM do the appropriate LinkTree on the textview 
(textview_LinkTree(t, self)).  (This is supposed to be done anyway.)  Then 
instead of A_*, use textview and substitute the textview for self.

Rob's suggestion to call the \italic{textview}'s
\bold{Set\{Fore,Back\}groundColor} just after a \bold{LinkTree} didn't seem to
have any effect.  However, Gary Keim sent me a note offline to try the same
calls just prior to calling the \italic{textview}'s \bold{FullUpdate}.  This
seems to work just fine.  I had considered such an attempt before, but didn't
even try it since I assumed things MUST be more complicated than that, and
also that it wouldn't cover \bold{textview_Update} calls.  But observed
results seem to show that it works out fine.

Sigh... Actually it turns out that the foreground/background colors of an 
inset get reset in the view_InsertView method.  I intend to fix this so that 
the foreground/background are only reset when the view's im changes, in 
linktree.  (There will also be a new method SetDefaultColors, which will allow 
a view to override the setting of default colors.)

Hi,

I have an application which is displaying some inset.
When I try to open a second window in order to display the
same inset, the window appears but remains empty, although I do call
myview_NotifyObersers(myview,0).

It appears to me as if the first window is redrawn twice.
When I resize the window, everything is all right, the window
and its contents appear.

I used the following code to draw the second window:

      myIM=im_Create(NULL);
      im_SetTitle(myIM,user);
      frame=frame_New();
      myview=myview_New();
      myview_SetDataObject(myview,mydata);
      frame_SetView(frame,myview);
      im_SetView(myIM,frame);

occurrences of keystate_SetOverride.)  This would have the advantage of 
working with most subclasses of text without the need to modify their code.

Actually, views generally do not need to call NotifyObservers.  Currently the 
only object which observes views is xim, and it only looks for destroyed

What happens after this code is run?  Does it get called from a key or menu 
binding?  (ie do you go into a computation loop, or back to the event loop?)


You might try adding an im_ForceUpdate just after the last im_SetTitle.  Also 
check that your view deals properly with LastPartialRedraw.  (There is a bug 
in the current release where if the menubar is on the first redraw is a 
LastPartialRedraw as opposed to FullRedraw.)

First, do you have any color preferences set?  Your comment about -fg
and -bg seem to indicate this isn't the problem, but...

What kind of machine and display are you using?  The symptoms are
indicative of a failure to get the "xshape10" font.  Try a xlsfonts|grep
xshape10, what does it say?

3.5.  Scale DIMENSION_Y by the ratio of BodyFont to 12.  I recently added code 
to scale DIMENSION_Y according to screen resolution, so adding the bodyfont 
size scaling ought to be reasonable simple.  It's on my todo list for after 
the next members only release.  (Which ought to be getting out this month, but 
may be early January.)

Hi,

my next question: I have not found a method to import arbitrary
postscript graphics into a atk document. Is there method in atk or has
anybody hacked a hack to do this. If this works, ez would be the most
wonderful thing to do text processing and I would immediately forget
framemaker......

Oops another one: Is there any OCR software that creates atk format
??? from tiff scanner files or at least a 
{mif,msword,wordstar,other common format,....}toatk
converter ? I would like to create a document store/retrieval system
that implements the following steps in document handling.

For postscript, take a look at the ps inset, in contrib/mit/annot/ps*.


There are a couple of RTF to ATK convertors in the distribution. 
atk/ness/nesslib/fromrtf.n is convertor written in ness; contrib/mit/rtf2 and 
2rtf are rtf->atk and atk->rtf translators written in C. Microsoft word can 
produce RTF files.


For OCR->ez, we use "ezread" which uses a Calera scanner to produce ez 
documents. I don't know if this is (or can be) distributed, or if it would do 
you much good.

There are a couple of rtf to ATK converters.  (one called rtf2, and the
other a ness script called fromrtf.n in $ANDREWDIR/lib/ness.)

Another project here developed a program to take the output from an OCR
scanner, and generate ATK datastream.  Chances are this wouldn't be
applicable for you unless you have the same hardware they had.  I don't
know if their code is distributable or to what extent the program is
"finished."  If you'd like more info let me know and I'll try to put you
in touch with someone.

Well, neither of these is exactly what you get.  What you get is a 
"high water mark" of the most recent message that you have read.
"changed folders" are the ones that have something newer than 
this.  The high-water-mark is kept on a per-folder basis.
Note that in Messages you can turn on a "set quit here" menu
that allows y ou to manually move the high-water-mark around,
which can be very useful.  The mark is displaye visually as a small
line in the captions area.  -- NB

There was a "ChangeBar" style which has since been renamed Strike-Through 
since that is more descriptive of what it is.  Also Todd Inglett has 
contributed patches which add a real change bar  style.  This feature will be 
available in the next release.

The things that were called change bars were not what I would have
called change bars.  Instead of getting a bar in the left margin for
text that was "different", what you got was a line through the text.

You can get those change bars if you hand-create a template file that
uses the changebar style name.

The reason why it's not documented, or hooked into the system for real,
I suspect, is that they're not what people expect from change bars...

Subject: Print from "help" on PS printer?

How can I print text from the help system menus on a Postscript
printer?  The following shell script works fine:

[bin_RIOS] 376> cat print_help
ezprint -t $1 | eqn -Tpsc | troff -Tpsc | psdit | lpr -Ppsb115

but the "Print" menu of the help system has only the options "Set
Printer" and "Print This File" - none of which seems to allow me to
enter all parameters. I guess that the Andrew system offers a
preference or a shell variable that allows me to set such a string.  I
read help files for quite some tome now but did not find it.  Can
anybody give me a hint?

Yes, I try to get help on \bold{printing} and nothing shows up!  It's in the 
\bold{preferences} help file:


Here's my previewcommand (for an RS/6000 w/ ghostview):

My previous message was .... incorrect.  The basic idea is this: before being 
passed off to the various mumblecommands, the source file is first converted 
to troff (possibly with embedded Postscript) and place in /tmp/%s.n, where %s 
is filename minus the extension.  So, you start with troff.

Certain people at my installation just can't get used to the fact
that ez won't delete selected text when you start typing on top
of it. They have gotten so accustomed to the way Mac and X works
that they don't want to revert. To be honest, I agree with them.

I assume I'm not the first one to ask about this. Is there any way
to set ez up to do this? Is maybe somebody planning on adding
this feature sometime? Can anyone estimate how much trouble it
would be for us to go to the source and make the changes
ourselves?

With the next release, there is an <other> option in lookz under
Enable and Disable, so you can insert the Strike-Through option
without editting the file in raw mode.

This can probably be accomplushed reasonably easily for textview.  Look
for textview-insert-character in atk/text.  The difficulty comes when
subclasses of textview enter the picture.  Some may rebind the keys so
that their own insert-character function gets called, some may arrange
for textviews routine to be called as part of their own but several
probably don't.  (e.g. the src views ctext, mtext, etc...)

Also you will probably want to make your code copy the deleted text to
the cut-buffer instead of simply deleting it, since unlike the mac ATK
has no undo.

Or, if you're *really* ambitious, put undo into ATK (multi-level undo,
please)....

If "this" means "typing replaces selected text with what you type",
FrameMaker does it, if you want to count it as an X application (given
that it runs atop other window systems as well)....

We have been running a CDROM release of ATK on IBM RS/6000 under AIX 3.2. 
Programs from the CD run OK. Problems arise when trying to compile own 
applications:

1) \italic{doindex} requires a filename prefixed by ./     i.e\italic{ 
 ./test.do} rather than \italic{test.do }as an argument.

Sample error output of \italic{doindex}:


\italic{.../andrew5.1/bin/doindex test.do}

doindex: indexing test.do ...While attempting to load test.do:

Error on load syscall: 'No such file or directory'

exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program test.do because of the following errors:

make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is -1.


The same call with ./test.do works OK:

\italic{.../andrew5.1/bin/doindex ./test.do}


2) \italic{makedo} and other utilities do not tolerate the ./ prefix, so it is 
hardly possible to replace  \italic{DOBJS = test.do}  by  \italic{DOBJS = 
./test.do} in the Imakefile.


Is anyone aware of a solution to that problem (may-be some setup flag or imake 
macro ?). Any help will be appreciated.

Certain people at my installation just can't get used to the fact
that ez won't delete selected text when you start typing on top
of it. They have gotten so accustomed to the way Mac and X works
that they don't want to revert. To be honest, I agree with them.

I assume I'm not the first one to ask about this. Is there any way
to set ez up to do this? Is maybe somebody planning on adding
this feature sometime? Can anyone estimate how much trouble it
would be for us to go to the source and make the changes
ourselves?

Before starting your make, try:
    setenv LIBPATH .:$LIBPATH; setenv CLASSPATH .:$CLASSPATH
(One or the other should do it. I have a dim memory of writing the original  
code for this. I wanted to use CLASSPATH but some grot or another required  
LIBPATH get used. In reality, you just want to ensure that . is in the  
appropriate path. Of course the code may have changed beyond recognition  
since I was last involved...)

How can I get the Andrew distribution for X11R4? I have the current
X11R5 version but I need to use it on a Sun w/ a Parallax video card
that only supports an X11R4 server. Hopefully there is an easier way than
getting the entire X11R4 distribution and just pulling off Andrew.

Good news / Bad news time.

Good news:  Andrew on the R5 tape works just fine with X11R4.  In fact,
there should still be defines buried in there for it to work with X11
all the way back to R2.

Bad news:  Andrew stresses portions of the X server that vendors never
bother to test.  I had bad experiences with the Parallax R3 server on
the IBM RT.  Perhaps Parallax has removed the bugs that Andrew found.

AFS is the Andrew File System, developed at CMU and now supported by
Transarc Corp. AFS runs on many unix platforms. Email

DCE distributed file system.

On the fileserver side the basic unit of the filesystem is the volume,
which is a container for a directory. Volumes are clipped togeether
through dynamic mountpoints. A volume can be moved transparently
between fileservers in a cell, a quota can be set, read-only
replicants can be made across fileservers, and so forth.

AFS is not part of DCE. A new/rethunk/redone entity, sometimes
erroneously referred to as AFS 4, drawing from the experience of AFS 3

How can I get the Andrew distribution for X11R4? 

I don't know about problems unique to the Parallax video card, but
otherwise, about the only incompatibility you'll likely encounter in
running the X11R5 Andrew binaries (from the CD ROM distribution)  under
X11R4 is that the font format is different (pcf vs snf).  Source from
this latest distribution can be compiled and linked against either X11R5
or X11R4 libraries.  While in theory  you could get by in just building
the .snf fonts, this isn't really feasible because Andrew fonts are
scattered throughout the build tree.  Fortunately, though, Andrew in its
entirety builds easily from the X11R5 distribution on Sun platforms.

I'm thinking about looking at the Andrew Toolkit, but I'm using Solaris 2.
Is there a version of this code that works with Solaris? I have some code
on CD-ROM that I got about 6 months ago, and I doubt it will work under

You must include "." in the LIBPATH when building because ATK dynamic objects 
(do's) are shared libraries.  This is happening because doindex is being run 
on the do's. in the $cwd... but it also indexes them in $ANDREWDIR/dlib/atk, 
which works without "." in LIBPATH.  So, I'll look into removing this 
seemingly unnecessary step in the process.

Why don't you give it a try.  I believe that it should work.  I think Solaris 
has a RockRidge compatible CDROM driver, so you can just mount the disc with 
the proper args for RockRidge and execute the binaries right from the disc. 


I'm sure that nobody I know has build Andrew under Solaris.

Subject: Is anyone successfully debugging ATK on DECMips or Sun platforms?

I have a problem that is only showing up on my Sun port of ATK.
But I can't seem to get reliable operation out of GDB to debug it.
Is there someone who has gdb for the Sun that does the right thing?

I am also trying to switch to a DECMips from a Vax.  The GDB 3.6 on the
vax that
I use works.  But so far NO version of GDB has done the right thing with ATK.

Help?

In our own humble opinion ATK has the best integrated MIME support of any mail 
reading software :-)


Seriously, ATK 5.1 supports MIME mail.  If both the sender and receiver have 
ATK the mime-ness of the transfer is almost entirely transparent.  (One of the 
exceptions is styles wrapped around views, which the ATK to MIME conversion 
can't handle.)


For non-ATK objects in MIME mail ATK behaves similarly to other mail readers 
which have been extended to use metamail to read such mail (ie run metamail, 
and it brings up a window).  The exception here is that MIME's rich text is 
automatically converted to and from ATK format styled text.

Indeed, rofftext does nothing useful with eqn pieces.  Sigh.

It should be straightforward to extend it to handle .EQ and the dits
that come after.  If there is enough demand, we may be able to do so; or
perhaps someone else would be able to take a crack at it.

In the other direction, eprint -t will convert eq insets into eqn.  One
could work in ez and then convert to troff for further editing.  (The
troff is a bit raw.  It uses the -matk macros, which are not as high
level as -ms or -me.)

Hi,
I have an inset containing several text-input fields, constructed
with arbcon. And each time the user types in a string and confirms
it with 'return' , I would like to switch the cursor to the next input 
field. Currently I am trying this by doing this: in the user-part of

Mr. Plotkin,

I recently found the Andrew site and have been looking at the demo, etc.
with my main interest in the Table spreadsheet.  I work on a reusable
software project for the Air Force and am part of the Software
Evaluation Team.  Presently, I am looking for spreadsheet software,
which is either Public Domain or Governmental-off-the-shelf software.

Anyway, I was wondering about Table.  Is it a stand-alone package (able
to be used without the rest of the Andrew world)?  Is it a
full-functioning spreadsheet, or basic token spreadsheet, to be used for
simple applications? Finally, can Table produce graphs and/or charts to
represent the spreadsheet data?  Or can it be used in conjunction with a
graphics package to create graphs/charts?

Thank you for your time.  I'm sorry for the "naivete" of these
questions, but I wasn't able to find docs on Table in the Table subdir
on emsworth.andrew.cmu.edu and didn't come across too much on Table in
the running demo which I logged into.

If Table is not to be recommended, is there any spreadsheet software
that you would suggest which would be Public Domain or governmentally
developed??

Yes, this is a problem. I believe that the proper fix is to have the
enterstrV view override WantInputFocus and , if self is the requestor
(i.e. the second argument) , make self->etextview the requestor.
Meanwhile, a quick fix would be to replace the call

     enterstrV_WantInputFocus(self->memberListView,self->memberListView);

with 

    view_WantInputFocus((struct view *)
    self->memberListView->etextview,(struct view *)
    self->memberListView->etextview);

The table/spreadsheet inset is fully operational in several ways.  Any
object can appear in a cell.  The table prints.  And the set of
equations is updated as in any other spreadsheet.  However, the code
does not support automatic generation of graphs and charts.

Doing graphs and charts from table is tantalizing close and would take
a programmer only a month or so, but the Consortium members have not
had this as a priority.  There are two ways it could be added:
either an outsider can do the code and contribute it, or existing or 
new members may express it as a priority project, in which case the
Consortium staff could undertake the work.

Has anyone done any work on porting ATK to *any* SVR4-derived UNIX?  If
so, and if there's more than one place where it's being done, perhaps
the people doing it should get together on that (I can easily imagine
person A porting it to some PClone running SVR4-for-i386, and person B
porting it to Solaris 2.x, and person A and person B having no idea that
the other's doing it).

Note that the right way to do the dynamic linking stuff for SVR4 is
probably to grab the SunOS 4.1[.x] version of the dynamic linking code
and proceeding from there (the "dlopen()"/"dlsym()"/etc. interface was
actually invented by AT&T, although they never released any
implementation until SVR4; Sun just used AT&T's interface for SunOS
4.1[.x]), rather than trying to teach the "do it yourself" code about
ELF (the main reason I did the version that used "dlopen()" and company
was to *keep* people from trying to teach the do-it-yourself version
about ELF).

You will probably also want to change the pseudo-tty handling code in
"typescript" and "tm" to use SVR4-style pseudo-ttys.

I rather doubt it can be built as an application without building the
rest of Andrew, as it's built atop ATK.

You can fire it up as a separate program.

Dunno what a "basic token spreadsheet" is, but, as spreadsheets go, it's
not exactly a power user's spreadsheet; it comes across to me as more of
a "proof of concept" spreadsheet, demonstrating that you can build an
ATK view/dataobject combination, usable as an inset, that offers some,
well, basic spreadsheet functionality for simple applications.

I suspect it wouldn't be screamingly fast for sufficiently large
spreadsheets, given that, as I remember, it parses the expression in a
cell every time it's evaluated.

Beats me whether any government has developed any spreadsheet.  There's
a freely-available spreadsheet for UNIX called "sc", and the GNU
project's Oleo may now be out, although, of course, while Oleo is
freely-available, it's definitely *not* public-domain - it's copylefted.

(It might be an interesting project to try to make Oleo into an ATK
dataobject and an ATK view, to replace "table".)

I just installed some basic parts of the Andrew system (namely messages) on
a Sun IPC (running SunOS 4.1.1) under X11R5, patchlevel 20. What annoys me
is that typing a national character (i. e. a German umlaut) in, say, ez
crashes the application. Is this regarded as usual behavior, could it be
due to my unusual installation, or did I miss anything in the
documentation? Everything else I tried in ez or messages seems to work.

I'm running unpatched ATK 5.1 compiled with the bundled compiler on a Sun IPX
running 4.1.3.  The cmenu help file sez:

PopupForegroundColor: black	(MenuForeground)
Determines the color to use for the foreground when drawing the menus.
The default value for the foreground color is black.  This attribute
is only consulted if the menus are being drawn on a color monitor.

Well, the menus seem to have decided that I don't have color hardware since
PopupOverlapPct: 80 and
PopupItemFont: -adobe-times-medium-i-normal--12-0-75-75-p-0-iso8859-1

both work in preferences (a link .Xdefaults), but PopupForegroundColor: red
doesn't. The following two do work, though:

help.ForeGroundColor: cyan
help.BackGroundColor: gray18

This is certainly not normal behavior.  Which version of Andrew are you

using?  (5.1 is the latest public release)  Check that

$ANDREWDIR/lib/compchar exists and contains the single readable file

comps.    It should start out like below...

Unfortunately ATK applications running under X are set up to send most

error messages to the ATK console program, so there may be a message

explaining the failure which isn't being displayed.  To avoid this you

could edit xim.c so that the first statement in xim_Establish console is

"return;"  This way most error messages will appear on stderr, usually

the tty the program started from.
