I friend of mine found (and fixed) a similar problem on Apollo's.  I've never
gotten around to reporting it to CMU.  Perhaps it is the same problem...check

I'm trying andrew toolkit in our sorbourne sparc station.
But there is some problem.
In compling atk/basics/region.do is not work doindex command.
The follow is error message. How can I solve this problem.

I had the same problem when building on a Sun4/SunOS4.0.3. The problem is that
doload can't find the libX11 library (ours are in /usr/local/lib). In the end
I patched the Imakefile. Here's a patch you can apply (of course its unofficial)

We have been discussing and experimenting with (for a long time now)
different ways of arranging applications in a Unix filesystem.
Despite several very sensible suggestions to the contrary,
/usr/local always seems to pop up as an old favorite,
along with its kissin' cousins /usr/lib and /usr/include.

Well, we're about to cast an organization scheme "in concrete"
as it were, and before we do I'd like to make a last appeal 
for case histories and/or rational analyses
from those who have fought this battle before us.

If ANYONE has any light to shed on the subject, particularly
with emphasis on how you came to your conclusions
(rather than just the conclusions themselves)
I'd sure appreciate hearing from you.

As long as I'm asking for input, what do you know about
"the depot" developed by the National Institute of Standards?
Their paper outlines a very sensible sounding organizational scheme,
but as we have learned from experience, "sounding sensible"
isn't necessarily tightly coupled with "working well".
Any reactions to "the depot"?

I've written a shell script to get around this mostly, but it sure would
be nice if Ez had the feature built in:

I'd like to be able to do something like
	ez -t my_subroutine_name
And have ez load the correct .c file as determined from the 'tags' file.

I imagine that it's not that simple because of the way insets work and
the command line option is targeted at a specific inset, but it would be
great to have it.

You can use the PBM package, and the converter I wrote to go from PBM
format to ATK format:

  tifftoppm <yourfile.tiff | ppmquant -floyd 2 | ppmtopgm | pgmtopbm |
pbmtoatk >newfile.atk

Perhaps someone at the ITC could advise on where to get the converters I
wrote?  They don't seem to be in Patch 10.

We have bult a facility that enables a user to handle ez comand-line flags in 
a custom way, through preference options and dynamically-loaded code.  We have 
used it to supply just the functionality you suggest -- to load a program 
given the tag.  We have also used it in a number of other ways.  

We are getting ready to submit this, along with a bunch of other useful 
things, for inclusion in a future patch of the toolkit.  We are awaiting the 
word from ITC that they are ready to take our stuff.

     The new ez2ascii filter, available with PL10, seems to fail when applied 
to files that are created by the AMS messages "Append to File" menu option. 


     The AMS "Append to File" menu option encapsulates ez files by adding the 
lines \bold{\\begindata\{text,\italic{num}\}} and 
 \bold{\\enddata\{text,\italic{num}\}}, to the beginning and end, 
respectively, of saved messages.  If the message to be saved contains 
formatting of its own, like italicized quotations, for example, then nested 
sets of \bold{\\begindata} and \bold{\\}\bold{enddata} will appear in the 
message body after it has been saved.  It appears that ez2ascii acts on only 
one level deep of text blocks marked by \bold{\\begindata} and 
\bold{\\enddata}, ignoring more deeply nested blocks of formatted text.


     The result is that quotations and other formatted material embedded in 
saved messages disappear when the ez2ascii filter is applied.

I have experimented with EZ, ATK, 
and I think that ATK has a lot to offer us.
However, I have tried to find a copy of "psdit", but the
quote from Adobe was $1795 per CPU.
This is way beyond our means.  Is there a less
expensive alternative?  Or does the ATK project
have any plans to revise their output formats 
so that it doesn't generate a mix of *roff and postscript
which is apparently costly unravel for a printer?

I hope there is a simple answer, because I was really enjoying
working with ATK.

It's not unraveled by the printer; ATK expects you to have DITROFF with
some package that lets you shove embedded PostScript into a "troff"
document, and that combination unravels it.  One such combination is
AT&T's Documenters Workbench (or some third-party binary port thereof)
plus Adobe's TranScript.

Unfortunately, another such combination does *not* appear to be the GNU
project's "groff"; I guess they decided they were too clever to just
implement embedded PostScript in a fashion compatible with the fashion
that "psdit" uses, or even implement their Obviously Superior solution
*and* provide a "psdit"-compatible scheme as well.

Alas, their scheme, at least as of the version of "groff" I got from
somebody's CD-ROM (I've no desire to bring up G++ just to get ATK to
print, so I just snarfed the binaries from a CD-ROM), seems to be
oriented towards having the "troff" document suck in the PostScript from
another file, rather than having it embedded in the "troff" source. 
However, ATK doesn't work that way; it just pumps out one "troff"
document.

Actually, this is not quite correct. I got the following from this
newsgroup a while back. Add the line 

.so /usr/andrew/lib/tmac/tmac.psatk

or the equivalent (source the 'roff file) to the end of Andrew's
/usr/andrew/lib/tmac/tmac.atK

It seems to work just fine for me - I've tried animations, rasters,
spreadsheets, and documents.

   Actually, this is not quite correct. I got the following from this
   newsgroup a while back. Add the line 

   .so /usr/andrew/lib/tmac/tmac.psatk

   or the equivalent (source the 'roff file) to the end of Andrew's
   /usr/andrew/lib/tmac/tmac.atK

This file has been part of the groff distribution since groff version
1.02 (the current version is 1.03).  The version included in the
article was corrupted (at least as it arrived at my site): all `..'
lines had been turned into `.'.

I'm very happy now.  I can print andrew rasters in documents using groff
without paying Adobe big bucks. Here's what I did:

1) installed groff (in /usr/andrew/{bin,lib})
2) Added the line  ".so /usr/andrew/lib/groff/tmac/tmac.psatk"
    to the end of /usr/andrew/lib/tmac/tmac.atk
3) Put the line
	FormatCommand: groff -e  /tmp/%s.n |
    in my .preferences file.

This works fine for printing rasters and tables.  I just get the following
messages on my console when I print:

/usr/andrew/lib/tmac/tmac.atk:93: warning: numeric expression expected
(got `\')
/tmp/Messages_You_Wanted_To_Print.n:3: warning: numeric expression
expected (got `F')
/tmp/Messages_You_Wanted_To_Print.n:364: warning: space required between
`sp' and argument

Any clues?

We are aware of this bug in the distribution.  The fix is to change the two 
occurances of ! $(Me) to ! $?Me, as follows: \quotation{

We unfortunately don't have a Sun4 to test this out.  The loaner we were using 
had to be returned, but we've put in a request to get our own.  I really can't

which reminds me - I still saw the typescript/xterm bug on ns113
(xterms started from a typescript window get the wrong terminal
settings and you've got to stty sane to make the xterm work

I've tracked down the problem I was having with help core dumping on
startup under ULTRIX 4.2 on a DECstation 5000.

ULTRIX (at least the version we have) has a bug in getservbyname that
causes it to core dump if a NULL second argument (proto) is provided.
Casting the 0 to (char *) doesn't help.  I changed the proto argument
to "tcp".  Don't know if that's right, but it doesn't matter here
because we don't have "andrewhelp" in our services database.

I just tried this (spell check in an EZ document) on my Sparc-II, SunOS
4.1.1, patchlevel 10, and found that it works just fine.  I have "Ispell
Version 2.0.02, May 1987 Beta posting" installed.  I selected a region
in the document, selected "Check Spelling" from the Search/Spell menu,
and the right things happened.  It also works without doing the region
selection first.

Heck, the patched code seems a more reasonable implementation *anyway*,
even if the unpatched version *doesn't* tickle a compiler bug.

"defptr" isn't going to become null while the loop is being executed
(unless, for example, it wraps around to 0 on a machine where a null
pointer has all bits zero), so it's a waste to test whether it's null
*every* time around the loop.

In addition, the

                  while (defptr && *defptr != (char *) NULL) {
                          panel_Add(panel, *defptr++, *defptr++, FALSE);
                          entriesadded++;
                  }

doesn't jump out and look to *me* like "if 'defptr' is non-NULL, scan
through the list of 'char *'s to which it points and, as long as you
don't hit the null terminator of that list, add the list members to the
panel" - which is presumably what the author had in mind - as the
patched version:

A while back there was a discussion in this group about the way ez behaves when it edits a file via a symbolic link: when you save the modified file, it replaces the *link* by a copy of the modified file, and the original file that was the target of the symbolic link remains unchanged.  My recollection is that several people suggested that ez should behave like EMACS in this respect, someone posted a patch to ez to accomplish this, and one of the ATK developers promised that this feature would be added to 






patch 10.

Alas, I tried ez from patch 10, and it still behaves the same as it always did, wreaking havoc on my shadow trees.  What's the story -- is there a reason why the patch wasn't applied?  Is there an undocumented option to enable this?  Does anyone know where we can obtain the patch?  Thanks!

The first message is caused by the line

in tmac.atk.  This should be

Using -C won't solve the problem, although it will suppress the
warning, because, with -C,

will be interpreted as

   I left in the comment about:

	   .\" The last line before the "'PE" is "\}" rather than ".\}".  This

We've decided that we should put out a patch 11 next week in order to get some 
external exposure to the things we've been working on recently before they go 
out with the final X11R5 release. If you have anything that you're planning to 
contribute to our R5 release that you'd like to have beta tested in this 
fashion, send it in NOW.


Patch 11 preview:


	improved transient window support

	new dialog boxes (in their own window!)

	motif-style cmenu's

	new pmax port that doesn't require G0 libraries

	HPUX 8.0 port for 700's and 800's (still working on 300/400's)

	misc. bug fixes and improvements


We will be freezing our code for the R5 release in one month -- changes and 
contributions you'd like us to include will need to be here in about 2 weeks 
so that we can get everything integrated in time. Things for patch 11 should 
get to us this week.

I remember seeing (about 1 to 2 months ago) that work has been recently
done to get PL10 to build on the DECstation platforms without the 'G0'
libraries - also that many other 'small' bug fixes were made.
Unfortanetly I can't currently find the source of these comments. I also
remember reading that a package of these was being sent to CMU for
inclusing in future releases.

My question is (a bit obvious at this point :-) will these modifications
make it into PL11?

Here are some suggestions I received. I agree that we need to look at the font 
server, and take advantage of it. A patch that fixes just the build problems 
might be nice, but I'm not sure it's worth our time -- what do you all think? 
Also, can one of you (Bob?) tell me what to think about the overhead/pobbconf 
stuff?

Will R5 allow downloading fonts from a started client to the server? 



If so, I think it would be much appreciated if ATK would make use of this 

since it then would be possible to use ATK even on a machine that hasn't ATK 

installed.

 It'd make much it easier to demo ATK at presumptive new ATK users.


Another issue I've been thinking of for a while:


With each patch released, the info-andrew maillist is \italic{flooded }with 

reports on \italic{build problems}. I think it would be a good idea to collect 

these reports for say a month after the release, make the necessary fixes and 

then publish a patch that only fixes the reported problems with \bold{NO }

functionality additions (i.e. no new bugs introduced). This would make life 

easier for those who have a lot of other work to do. I'm pretty sure that 

there are enough eager experimenters out there now that you won't risk the 

case that everybody will wait until the cleaned up patch comes out.



Also much liked would be a clean-out of all the CMU`ishnesses in 

overhead/pobbconf. The current setup creates zillions of bboards whose usage 

are unknown to the average user outside CMU.

So here's a patch that:

1) includes both fixes to "tmac.atk":

2) causes "tmac.atk" to source "/usr/andrew/lib/tmac/tmac.psatk" if
   "\*(.T" is "ps", so that if "groff" is being used, the standard ".PS"
   and ".PE" macro definitions are overwritten with the "tmac.psatk"
   ones;

3) includes "tmac.psatk", and causes it to be installed.

These are patches to "Imakefile" and "tmac.atk" in "atk/text", and a
"tmac.psatk" that should also be put into "atk/text".  Some way of
getting the right pathname into the ".so" request may be desired
here....

The code in "overhead/util/lib/config.c" doesn't support the use of "!"
as a comment character.  This may not get in the way of folks who stick
their Andrew stuff in "preferences", but it does get in the way of those
of us who stick it in ".Xdefaults" and who run "xrdb" on ".Xdefaults",
because "#" upsets the C preprocessor.

This patch adds support for "!" as a comment character.

Could anyone please tell me the standard ATK method of pausing
after using message_DisplayString to allow people time to read
the message before something else pops up in that line ? Also
I have used the hyperlink button as an inset template for a
similar but different inset and would like to change the menu 
title. Where does it get this name from and where can I change it ?

I'll change the documentation (prefs.help) to say that the beginning of a file 
will ignore the preference setting and always pick up the style of the 
paragraph.

I've been working on this bug in my spare time.
(I have not had much spare time, so I've not made much progress.)

The problem occurs in drawtxtv.c, in GenerateLineItems, in cases where
noWrap is not set, and the indentation is farther over than the window
is wide (on or about line 726).

The problem is that no line items are generated, and the routine returns.

Luckily the empty list of line items is given credit for having a line height.
The routine is called to generate no line items, and to not continue
forward on the line until the rest of the screen is filled with nothing,
at which point the screen is "finished being redrawn".

I hope soon to code a fix which will:

a. detect the case of no line items being generated because the indent
is too far over.

b. draw a symbol in the right margin to show that there is more text to
be seen (as is currently the case if noWrap is set.)

If anyone else feels like coding this before I get time, I'll be happy
to help out with an audit of the code.

There is no supported way to tell the InteractionManager to display a certain 
message for some specific amount of time before allowing a new message to be 
displayed.   What message is overwriting the message you are trying to 
display?  Some checkpointing message?

The view is responsible for posting menus, so the menu title can be found in 
atk/hyplink/linkv.c in the classprocedure linkview__InitializeClass(). 
  Similarly, the pushbutton title is set in pshbttnv.c, 
pushbuttonview__InitializeClass().

No, that's not quite right (there's nothing special about the beginning of a 
file case -- that's just an instance of the new beginning of paragraph 
behavior). Change the documentation to say:

\leftindent{Changing these defaults changes how text behaves when you add it

the style. (Hence the defaults listed above.) However, if you add text at the 
beginning of a paragraph, you will always pick up the style of the paragraph, 
regardless of the setting of ez.StylesIncludeBeginning.

The debugging version of the ITC malloc supports the "plumber".  This option 
is a function which sends to a file a table with one entry for each place in 
the program which calls malloc.  The entry lists the number of blocks 
allocated, the total size allocated and the minimum and maximum size.  It also 
lists the range of "sequence numbers" covered; the sequence number increments 
by one for each allocation, so a low sequence number range means the blocks 
have not been allocated recently while a high number means there has been a 
recent allocation.  (For a user interface to the plumber function, see the 
following bind_description entry in $SRC/atk/basics/commmon/im.c:

The drawback of DEBUG_MALLOC_ENV is that an additional two words are allocated 
with each malloced block.  There is no appreciable time penalty, all the 
overhead of building and sorting the table is done during the function call. 
 When examining a core dump, the first of the additional words can be valuable 
because it gives the address of the call on malloc which created the object; 
 usually this helps determine what type of object it is.  If a block has been 
freed, the additional word lists the location of the call to the free() 
function.

 With severe leaks, virtual memory usage and paging increase to the detriment 
of performance.  To solve core leaks you will want to link against a version

Using sleep in an interactive ATK object is a bad idea in general, since it 
will hang the entire process.  Also if backing-store is not enabled on the X 
server any areas which become obscured and then exposed will not be redrawn.  


I believe something like the following may be more what you want:

You could then also have one or more key sequences (^G and maybe others) bound 
to a function which would also set ContinueLoop to FALSE.


Danger: once you return from im_Interact you are not guaranteed what state you 
are in.  For example if this was done in a function called from a proctable 
entry, after the im_Interact the view that the function was called on may have 
been destroyed (ie, the  user may have deleted that buffer, etc...).


Note also that the message is still subject to timing out and to being 
overwritten by any other threads of control.  The timeout on messages can be 
set by the preference MessageTimeout (given in seconds, the default is 15).

How about add support in the message window to scroll back previous
messages with the PageUp and PageDown keys?  Or save the previous n
messages in a buffer and add an option to display them.  This won't keep
the message on the screen for you, but at least you can go back and see
what it was.

In the old version of BE2 (bx), this was available automatically -- you could 
just enlarge the message area and it would "grow" a scroll bar, which was 
great.  I've advocated putting this back into the system ever since it was 
removed with the change to BE2.

I've installed ATK PL10 on our RS/6000's and that seems to be running fine.


Now I'm working on our Sun4's under SunOS 4.0 and I'm getting core dumps.  I'm 
sure it's something I'm not doing right, but can't determine what it is. 
 'typescript' works fine, but console and ez core dump:

I seem to remember that the most effective way of sifting though core files is 
to use gdbx, but we don't have it installed here.  Using dbx, however, (with 
lots of errors edited out) I have determined:
