Takeo Kanade, Whitaker Professor of Computer Science and Director of Robotics Institute, receives Aviation Week & Space Technology 1997 Laurels Citation

Takeo Kanade, Whitaker Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Robotics Institute, is a recipient of an Aviation Week & Space Technology 1997 Laurels citation, honoring individuals and teams who made substantial contributions to the global field of aerospace in 1997. Honorees were selected from nominations submitted by Aviation Week editors in the categories of commercial air transport, government/military, aeronautics/propulsion, space, electronics and operations. The individuals who made the most outstanding contributions in each category, and thus will be the Laureates, will be named in the April 6 issue of the magazines. The Laureates will be selected by the editors of Aviation Week from among those who have earned citations.

As noted in the electronic citation, "Takeo Kanade, whitaker professor of computer science and robotics and director of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, for contributions to computer vision and robotics with applications including autonomous helicopters. His latest work combines the technologies from computer vision, virtual reality and television to create "virtualized reality," a technology that lets a viewer watch a real event from any perspective."
