SHINING STARS 2000 HCII Director Elected to the National Academy of Engineering
Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made "important contributions to engineering theory and practice, including significant contributions to the literature of engineering theory and practice," and those who have demonstrated "unusual accomplishment in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology." Dan graduated in 1968 with a B.S. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He received both an M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford in 1972. That same year he joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. Currently, he is involved in the Collaborative Onsite Wearable System Project, a collaborative effort of system developers and researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Engineering Design Research Center, Robotics Institute, and Human Computer Interaction Institute, and major aircraft, vehicle and computer organizations. The goal of the project is to " rapidly evolve mobile technologies to enhance performance of workers by improving the quality, portability and distribution of information to physically separated individuals or teams. " Dan also teaches courses on mobile computing, rapid prototyping of computer systems, and wearable computer design.
