2009-2010 Cultural Attitudes Towards Computer Science: How do they Affect Women’s Representation in the Field? Project Page
2004-2005 Motivation, Persistence and Success in Computer Science: What Can Computer Science Seniors Tell Us? Project Page
Sponsored by CRA-W
Brief description: These studies are part of an
ongoing line of investigation into the culture of computing among computer
science undergraduate students at Carnegie Mellon. This work began with
the longitudinal, intensive studies of Jane Margolis and Alan Fisher
(1994-99), and has continued with the 2002 and 2004 Seniors’ Interview
projects conducted by Carol Frieze and Lenore Blum. We are particularly
interested in assessing the changes that have evolved in what appears
to be a more balanced environment: more balanced in terms of gender,
more balanced in terms of the breadth of student interests, and more
balanced in terms of professional experiences afforded all students.
REU logistics: Teams consisting of women, and/or underrepresented minorities, are especially encouraged
to apply. The project is appropriate for students interested in
doing an independent study or senior thesis.
Schedule: Year long projects
Number of undergraduate positions: 2
Supported by: CRA (the Computing Research Association)
