Research Experience for Undergraduates Programs

CMU Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory
(CUPS)
http://cups.cs.cmu.edu/

Brief description: The CMU Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory (CUPS) was established in the Spring of 2004 to bring together Carnegie Mellon University researchers working on a diverse set of projects related to understanding and improving the usability of privacy and security software and systems. CUPS supports undergraduate students working with graduate students and faculty on a variety of research projects:
Examples of current and prior projects: We are working on a number of projects related to computer-readable privacy policies known as “P3P policies.” We are developing new features for the Privacy Bird (http://privacybird.com) software and incorporating it into the Mozilla web browser and a web search engine front end. We are developing an automated system to collect P3P policies and use them to gain a better understanding of web site privacy practices.

REU logistics: Students are provided a stipend and shared office with borrowed computer. (Students are responsible for their own room and board as well as any travel expenses to and from Carnegie Mellon University.)

Schedule: Fall 2004, Spring 2005, Summer 2005 (anticipated).

Number of undergraduate positions: 1 or 2

Supported by: Cylab

More information: See the CUPS web site: http://cups.cs.cmu.edu/
