Jim Whitehurst, president and CEO of Red Hat Inc., on Monday will dedicate the Red Hat Computer Laboratory in the Gates Center and present a special talk about how Red Hat has built an S&P 500 business using open source as a business and organizational model.

Both Whitehurst and Michael Cunningham, Red Hat executive vice president, will participate in the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:50 p.m. at GHC 3000, behind the R-Bar Café. This is one of two classrooms that will house the computer lab; the other is GHC 5205, otherwise known as the Siewiorek-Walker Classroom. The two rooms will be equipped with a total of 60 workstations installed with Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux and will be open 24/7.

Whitehurst, who was named president and CEO of Red Hat in December 2007, will present a special talk, "Competing as a 21st Century Enterprise in a 20th Century World," at 3 p.m. Monday in GHC 6115. He will talk about how open source principles have helped Red Hat become one of the most successful and fastest-growing technology companies of the 21st century and about how they can be employed by any organization.
