PACT Center Receives $2.7 Million in Funding

Building on the success of its cognitive tutor courses for high school mathematics the Pittsburgh Advanced Cognitive Tutor (PACT) Center has received $2.7 million in funding from Carnegie Learning Inc for the three-year project "Cognitive Tutors for Middle School Math".

The project investigators, Albert Corbett (HCII), Ken Koedinger (HCII), and John R. Anderson (Psychology) are developing, evaluating and piloting three Cognitive Tutor courses for middle level mathematics. Carnegie Learning was founded by Carnegie Mellon 18 months ago to disseminate the Cognitive Tutor high school courses and to broaden the successful application of educational technologies. The Cognitive Tutor Algebra course, which started the PACT Center, received an "Exemplary Curriculum" designation from the US Dept of Education last year and Carnegie Learning has doubled the PACT Center's prior dissemination of the course so that it is now in more than 150 schools across country.
