Our Best

by Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth

Review by Bill Johnston

Our Best by Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth is a collection of what Pohl thinks are their best collaborated short stories, but almost all of his selections are stories Kornbluth started that were finished by Pohl after Kornbluth's death. In his introduction, Pohl says that most of their stories were written early in their careers and I guess he thinks that these early stories were poorly done. I think Pohl is a good author with such novels as Gateway and The Years of the City behind him, but it seems to me that the stories in this collection are good because Kornbluth thought them up and Pohl finished them. The stories I have read by Kornbluth have had good ideas but were not all that well written, whereas Pohl does a much better job writing than he does creating.
