I have two manuals. The newer QD21 has a menu driven Firmware formatter and is invoked by the commands. The older one doesn't, but answeres with a 0200 instead of a 0400. So, picking up with the console comands at >>> D/P/W 2000YYYY 3003 ! Enable Special mode >>> E/P/W 2000YYYY ! ACK special mode 0100 >>> D/P/W 2000YYYY 440n !Write the Format Unit command !into the SA register where n !is the logical unit to be !formated Valid = 0 - B >>> E/P/W 2000YYYY ! ACK format command 0200 >>> D/P/W 2000YYYY nnnn !Write 16-bit volume serial ! Maybe be any value from 0001-FFFF >>> E/P/W 2000YYYY ! ACK serial number 0400 >>> D/P/W 2000YYYY 0 !Write format parameter word !Not defined, reserved for future use The QD21 begins formatting the selected drive. >>> E/P/W 2000YYYY Poll register until the QD21 clears bit 10 to indicate that the format operation concluded. If the operation was not successful, the QD21 sets bit 15. The low byte contains the error code: 04 RAM error 05 Firmware checksum error 0C Self-test fatal error 40 Drive not ready 41 NOVRAM checksum error 43 RCT Write error 45 Format error 46 Drive write protected 47 FCT write error 49 Seek timeout Is this a reformat of an old drive or a format of a clean rive? You may have to go though the step to load the NOVRAM. -- Vance Haemmerle vance@alumni.caltech.edu
