There is an E-Prom with a white sticker in one corner of the board.
Mine is labeld E65C, meaning I have Rev C of the E-Prom -- before
the FRD came along.  I have alternate instructions for starting the
the format program for my model, but I don't yet have corresponding
instructions for setting the drive geometry parameters in NOVRAM.
Consequently the format starts up OK, hums along smoothly for exactly
10 minutes and 15 seconds, and then aborts with an error as it runs
off the end of the drive.

That's a possibility.  Emulex sold that division to GD California,
and I have been in contact with their product technical engineer
who is digging up more info for me.  I will send you a separate
E-Mail will console commands for starting the format with the
earlier E-Proms.
