The department of Physics and Computer Science consists of about 20 physicists, computer scientists and engineers enjoying an exceptionally collegial atmosphere. Christopher Newport University,Virginia's newest state-supported university, is located on an attractive campus in Tidewater Virginia. CNU enrolls 5000 students, offers the bachelor's in 30 fields and a master's in 6 fields. In addition to baccalaureate degrees in Applied Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Information Science, the department also offers the M.S. degree in Applied Physics and Computer Science. The University is near two national labs, the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and NASA-Langley, and high-tech companies such as Canon-USA. Beaches and Colonial Williamsburg are within 30 minutes.
Six departmental labs support research in microprocessors, VLSI, parallel processing, communications, information science, lasers and photonics, and superconductivity. Faculty offices connect to Sun, PC, and Mac networks with a T1 connection to the Internet. Research in computer architecture, software engineering, communications, operating systems, or artificial intelligence is preferred. The salary is competitive.
Effective English language skills are essential; a Ph. D. in a related area is required.
