From: clarinews@clarinet.com (UPI) Subject: AIDS infection rate for gays unchanged Date: 24 Sep 92 12:53:08 GMT PITTSBURGH (UPI) -- The University of Pittsburgh's Men's Study says despite talk about increased awareness and safer sex, young gays are becoming infected with the AIDS virus at the same rate as gay men were eight years ago. The study has been following the health of more than 1,000 gay and bisexual men since the early 1980s. About 7 percent of the 121 men ages 18-22 enrolled in the study in 1984 and 1985 were infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Seven percent of the 62 men in the same age categroy enrolled since 1988 also were HIV-infected. Pitt research specialist Anthony Silvestre said he anticpates a steady and continuing number of gay men being diagnosed with AIDSs in the next 10 years.
