STARFLEET RANK INSIGNIA

Pips and bars for commissioned officers are worn on the right-hand side of the collar. Marines wear the same insignia, but can be differentiated by their uniforms.

Fleet ranks are in capitals, Marine equivalents follow.

CADET

ENSIGN or Second Lieutenant

LIEUTENANT (junior grade) or First Lieutenant

LIEUTENANT or Lieutenant Major

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER or Major

COMMANDER or Lieutenant Colonel

CAPTAIN or Colonel

The rank of FLEET CAPTAIN indicates that the Captain does not actually hold a command, but instead holds a staff position aboard a ship or station. The insignia is the same as for Captain.

COMMODORE or Brigadier

REAR ADMIRAL or Brigadier General

BRANCH ADMIRAL or Lieutenant General

ADMIRAL or Major General

SENIOR ADMIRAL or General

FLEET ADMIRAL (No Marine equivalent)

EXECUTIVE Admiral is a special rank for our retired Fleet Admirals. They usually are written as NPCs doing diplomatic work of some sort, but are no longer directly active in Starfleet. For example, EA Gerber has a seat on the Federation Council as a representative from Earth. The rank insignia is as Senior Admiral, but enclosed within a gold box.
