1. What is rec.music.makers.squeezebox for?

Here is the charter for rec.music.makers.squeezebox:

rec.music.makers.squeezebox will be an unmoderated discussion group
focusing on the the playing and maintenance of all sorts of
squeezeboxes, including piano and button accordions, concertinas,
melodeons, and bandoneons.  This can include, but is not limited to,
discussion of playing technique; instrument types, including
the classification of various instruments; construction, maintenance,
and repair technique; cross-instrument comparisons; instruction; and
literature.  In keeping with the music.makers hierarchy, the discussion
of squeezebox players and musical genres which happen to include
squeezeboxes should be oriented towards fellow players, not fans.  For
example, technical discussion of technique, playing styles, or kinds of
boxes used is fair game.  On the other hand, discussion of what the stars
eat for breakfast or which zydeco band is clearly the rockingest should
be held in newsgroups devoted to that star or genre, since squeezeboxes
are only marginally involved.

The intended audience for this group is all those who play, maintain,
or build any variety of squeezebox at any level of ability.

2. I can't read news.  Can I still access r.m.m.squeezebox posts?

Yes.  You can get and create posts by mail, by subscribing to the
squeezebox mailing list.  All posts to the group are sent to this list, 
and all posts to this list are posted on the group.

To subscribe, send a letter with no subject line containing the
following line to majordomo@hockeytape.com:

subscribe squeezebox

Pretty easy, huh?

Once you're subscribed, you can post articles to the newsgroup simply
by sending them to squeezebox@hockeytape.com.


3. What is the posting ettiquette on r.m.m.squeezebox?

We are very proud of the squeezebox community we have built up.  One
of the things for which we have striven is to maintain a cordial,
friendly atmosphere.  We welcome you to join us, and to post your
questions, comments, and responses to ongoing threads. When posting,
please help us to maintain our community by following the following
guidelines:

	1. When posting, please make sure your post is appropriate for
	this group.  At a minimum, your post should touch on an aspect
	of squeezeboxes.  More specifically, this group is for people
	who play and/or build squeezeboxes, rather than people who
	listen to them (we like them too, but that is not what this
	group is about).  If you want to discuss a particular artist
	or genre from a listening perspective you may find one of the
	following newsgroups more appropriate for your post:

		alt.music.polkas
		rec.music.celtic
		rec.music.country-western.old-time
		rec.music.folk
		
	2. Flaming is *EXTREMELY* inappropriate on this group.  Even
	run-of-the-mill grumpiness is unwelcome.  When you post,
	please try to maintain a cordial tone.  No one wants to read
	posts that insult or degrade their friends on the net.

	3. If you see that someone else has made an inappropriate
	post, please ignore it.  Responding to it will only further
	degrade our environment.   If you believe the post has been
        made in error, gentle guidance via private e-mail is an
        appropriate response. 

	4. If you have a question, please check the appropriate FAQ to
	see if it has already been answered before posting it (see
	below).  Of course, requests for additional clarification of
        points covered in the FAQ are always welcome.

	5. Please use your discretion in making commercial posts so as
	not to overwhelm the group.  If you are a dealer, please lump
	your offered instruments together in one post made not too
	frequently.  Please do not cross-post instrument offerings
        that include a few squeezeboxes in a sea of other instruments;
        commercial posts, too, should be appropriate for the
        newsgroup. 

        6. Please do not post binary files like .gif-files or
        .wav-files on the squeezebox newsgroup.  These may be posted
        on the binary newsgroups or put on a www-server with a pointer
        to the file announced to the newsgroup.  This is because many
        people have to pay for downloading news, and binary files are
        very large and hence expensive.

This document was written by Phoebe Sengers (phoebe@cs.cmu.edu), with
the aid of her friends on the accordion and concertina mailing list
(the former embodiment of rec.music.makers.squeezebox).
