ABOUT THE POSITION:

Note: This faculty position in Software Systems is a senior position, but they also have junior faculty positions available.

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CS&E) at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a faculty position in the area of Software Systems from candidates with an outstanding record of research accomplishment. Software Systems is broadly defined to include software engineering, networking, multimedia, internet technology, electronic commerce, computer security, high performance computing, parallel and distributed systems, databases, graphics and visualization, and human-computer interaction. Applicants must possess a distinguished research record, demonstrated ability in establishing and leading a highly visible research program in their area, and a commitment to quality teaching and mentoring at the graduate and undergraduate levels. A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related area is required. The appointment will be at the rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor and will afford the right individual the opportunity, resources, and flexibility to build a top-notch research program.

This is the first of several positions for new faculty members, outstanding in their fields, allocated to CS&E as part of the "digital technology initiative". This initiative affirms the strong commitment of the State of Minnesota in strengthening the University as a leader in the area of digital technology. State funding has been approved recently for the construction of a $56M University-wide Digital Technology Center and a new Science and Technology Library. The department of CS&E and the new faculty will play a major role in the activities of the Digital Technology Center. The Digital Technology Center will be the home for the University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, the Laboratory for Computational Science and Engineering, the Telecommunications and Advanced Networking Laboratory and other new laboratories to be added.The Department has also been identified for significant growth in faculty lines over the next few years, and a concurrent search is underway to fill four additional faculty positions this year.

The research and teaching missions of the Department encompass a wide range of areas, including software engineering, networking, multimedia, internet computing, distributed systems, databases, computer architecture, artificial intelligence, robotics and computer vision, algorithms and complexity theory, computational geometry, computer graphics, visualization, human-computer interaction, parallel computing, and scientific computing. Its faculty members, currently numbering twenty-five, have access to excellent computing facilities both within the Department and at the various research centers on campus, including the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, and the Army High Performance Computing Research Center. Annual research expenditures in the Department have been growing steadily over the past several years, and topped $4.2 million in 1997-98. The Department has a large graduate program, comprising about 250 graduate students, and offers traditional Master's and Doctoral degrees, as well as a specialized Master's degree in Software Engineering. (About 60 Master's and 20 Doctoral degrees are awarded annually.)
