JIM MORRIS TO BE NEW SCS DEAN...Paul Christiano, Provost of Carnegie Mellon, has announced that Jim Morris, Herbert A. Simon Professor of Human Computer Interaction, has accepted the position of Dean of the School of Computer Science. His duties will commence on 1 July 1999. "Jim, who has served as Head of CSD since 1992, has successfully led the reshaping of the department...while making significant contributions to SCS as a whole. He led in the creation of the HCI Institute and as noted, clearly "understands SCS, its shining tradition, and the vision to which it must aspire as the School continues to chart the future for itself and for those many other leading institutions that look to SCS for leadership." Jim graduated from CMU in 1963 with a degree in Mathematics, followed by an MS in Management and PhD in Computer from MIT. He served on the faculty of Computer Science at Berkeley for five years, before joining the research staff at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. In 1982 he returned to our campus as founding director of the Information Technology Center, which organized and implemented the "revolutionary" Andrew system. He joined the CS faculty in 1987. Dr. Christiano added, "Jim inherits a legacy created by giants, including Dean Raj Reddy, whose incomparable leadership has helped to advance Carnegie Mellon in many ways...I wish to express my and President Cohon's profound appreciation for all that Raj has done to advance the stature and achievements of the University. We all look forward to Raj's continuing colleagueship." Thunderous applause from all of SCS!
