NEW DISTINCTIONS...Mei Chen, Takeo Kanade, Dean Pomerleau, and Henry Rowley, have won the Best Paper Award of the NASA/Goddard Image Registration Workshop (IRW), held 20-21 November 1997 in Greenbelt, Maryland, for their work on "Anomaly Detection Through Registration." The paper will be published in the upcoming special issue on image registration of the journal, "Pattern Recognition."

HERBERT SIMON TEACHING AWARD...M. Satyanarayanan (Satya!) has been awarded the 1997/98 Herbert A. Simon Award for Excellence in Teaching, awarded in recognition of his excellence and dedication to teaching. The award was established in honor of Herbert Simon, scholar and teacher extraordinaire, who has consistently and reliably set a standard of excellence in both teaching and research in our university. Qualities worth emulating! Bravos to Satya from his colleagues, friends and (most importantly) students.

STAFF RECOGNITION AWARDS ARE NIGH...All SCS faculty, staff and students are invited to the 1998 School of Computer Science Staff Recognition Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 1. To be held in Rangos Hall, in the University Center, the reception will be held from 10:30-11:00 am, follwed by the awards ceremony at 11:00 am, at which time the recipient/s of the SCS Staff Recognition Award (SCSi) will be announced. We are delighted to announce this year's nominees:

---Dorothy Zabrowski, CS

Join us in honoring these outstanding members of our community and the recipients of the SCS Service Recognition Awards. As the award committee has noted, "this ceremony is one you won't want to miss!"

HIPNAV WINS NATIONAL AWARD...The UPMC Shadyside/Carnegie Mellon Orthopedic Research Team has won the National Hip Society's 1998 Otto Aufranc Award for the development and clinical trials of HipNav, the first computer-assisted surgical navigation tool designed to improve the success rate of total hip replacement surgery. The team, led by Dr. Anthony Digioia who heads the Center for Medical Robotics and Computer-Assisted Surgery, and Takeo Kanade, director of the Robotics Institute, received the award March 22 at the Hip Society's annual meeting in New Orleans. The award recognizes "innovative clinical or basic research resulting in important advances in the management of hip disorders." Using infrared sensors and a 3-D computerized imaging system, HipNav improves accuracy and reliability when implanting a replacement for the acetabulum (for those inquiring minds, the socket in the pelvis that holds the ball joint of the femur or upper leg bone). The team is walking tall!

SCS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI LECTURE...Jim Mitchell, Sun Fellow and Vice President of Architecture & Technology, JavaSoft, joins us for a look into "Java Hot Spots" at the next Alumni lecture on Thursday, April 16 at 4:00 pm in Wean Hall 7500. Distinguished donuts at 3:45 outside the auditorium.

PROPOSALS...Martin C. Martin is "Breaking Out of the Black Box: A New Approach to Robotic Perception" at his robotics thesis proposal on Friday, April 10 at 2:00 pm in FRC 100. His committee includes Hans Moravec (Chair), Illah Nourbaksh, Simon Penny, and Peter Cariani (Neurobiologist, Eaton Peabody Laboratory for Auditory Physiology, Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary).
