Flying Robots at RI Build 3D World Maps

I will present my team's on-going aerial robotics work with emphasis on the 3D mapping aspects. We have built autonomous systems which can fly over an area of interest to collect and immediately deliver color 3D data points. We have also some results in automatically building accurate (~10cm accuracy) virtual models based on the flight data sets. Such models are useful in a range of applications (construction, surveying, etc.), however more interestingly, the models can be quite fun to interact with on the computer to make one feel present somewhere else. Mid-Sized (10-ft long) robot helicopters do the mapping on their own given a prescribed path one can send from a laptop.
While most of the work is academic in nature, there are a few real world applications. In particular, Yamaha motor of Japan is using such machines to keep track of the progress in large construction projects. Also, they have built a number of maps for the authorities following landslides or volcanic activity in Japan. I will present the current capabilities of our helicopter systems with some real examples of the aerial data.


Speaker Biography


Omead Amidi is a research faculty member at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute. He is the co-founder (with Takeo Kanade) of the autonomous helicopter lab where for the past 17 years he has developed and build various unmanned helicopter systems. He received his Ph.D. degree from Carnegie Mellon Electrical and Computer Engineering department in 1996.
