Applying Machine Learning to the

Treatment of Diabetes in Qatar

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic condition that affects about 200 million people worldwide. In Qatar, the home of Carnegie Mellon's new branch campus, about 15% of the population has been diagnosed with the disease, compared to about 5% of the U.S. population. We are working to create detailed datasets that can be used to learn and evaluate individualized models of the glucose regulatory system. On a higher level, we are also working to track patient behaviors and the results of those behaviors. This information will be utilized to increase the frequency and quality of interaction between patient and physician. The end goal of this project is to furnish physicians with the information necessary to efficiently and consistently treat an individual.

Speaker Biography

David is a current PhD. student in the Robotics Institute working at the new Carnegie Mellon Campus in Doha, Qatar. David received a B.S. degree in Physics and Mathematics from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. As an undergrad he participated in internships at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and Jet Propulsion Lab. Prior to enrolling in the Robotics Institute he spent a year teaching at a secondary school in rural Kenya. David has type I diabetes and is involved in efforts to use technology to improve the treatment and understanding of the disease.
