Measurements and standards facilitate technology development and deployment by providing researchers, vendors, and users with means to calibrate, evaluate, and integrate. The NIST Intelligent Systems Division (ISD) works with industry to develop and apply measurements and standards for intelligent systems in industrial and military domains. This talk will focus primarily on ISD work to define performance metrics for autonomous robots, including the development of 1) technology readiness level tests for military unmanned ground vehicles and 2) reference test arenas for autonomous mobile robots. A subset of the NIST reference test arenas will be used in the RoboCup American Open rescue robot competition to be held at CMU April 30 - May 4. The presentation will also touch on ISD programs to develop and test the STEP-NC standard for advanced machine tool control, and to identify information security requirements for industrial control systems.

Speaker Biography

Al Wavering is Acting Chief of the Intelligent Systems Division (ISD) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). ISD develops architectures, interface standards, algorithms, and test methods for intelligent systems used in industrial manufacturing and military applications. Wavering joined NIST (then the National Bureau of Standards) in 1985 as a mechanical engineer after obtaining an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. For 11 years he designed and implemented high performance robotic devices, real-time control systems, and sensory interactive algorithms as a member of the technical staff. He became leader of the Machine Systems Group in 1996. He has led efforts to develop standards and test methods for interoperability of automated dimensional metrology equipment, and to develop information security requirements for the computer control systems used in the production and distribution of electric power, oil and gas, water, chemicals, and manufactured goods. Wavering has served as acting ISD chief since April 2002. He is a member of IEEE, Tau Beta Pi, and Alpha Pi Mu, and is involved in the activities of the SME Education Foundation. He was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Northern Virginia.
