  Whereas, with "scheme", until recently, my little band of friends in 
the Midwest pronounced it "sheem" (not familiar with the phonetic 
conventions here, sorry). Don't know where we got this pronunciation, as 
it does appear to be nonstandard anywhere ELSE in the US.
