Another example: a HUD or an HUD?
You'd first need to know if it's said    H   U   D  or  hud, rhyming with 
mud.   (It's the latter, standing for heads-up display.)

Many people call all abbreviations acronyms, even when they aren't.
Is HUD a true acronym?  It's a syllable, but not a word.
