Hi,

Many people have already participated in this letter similarity
survey, and I am thankful to all of you. However, I still need more
people to evaluate the similarity of pairs of characters in the
Katakana syllabary (another 30 people would be wonderful). It's a big
syllabary, and each person evaluates the similarity between only a
subset of the characters -- that's why so many people are necessary.

I need two types of people: 1) those who have NO knowledge of the
Katakana syllabary -- I'm interested in the fresh perception, and
2) those who are intimate with the characters -- to see how the novice
views change over time.

The url of the survey is:

        http://mdrs1.technion.ac.il:8080/~jody/survey.html

It takes about 10 minutes to fill out the survey. If you have Mosaic
or Netscape, you're eligible to do it (there are graphics in it).

The reason for this survey is that I am investigating ways to teach
alphabets so there will be minimal confusion between similar letters.
I need to see what letters people consider similar, and this survey is
providing me with that data.

I have written up a preliminary report that explains how I did this
data collection effort. This, and the results of the similarity
survey for the ASL fingerspelling alphabet, are accessible from my
home page: http://mdrs1.technion.ac.il:8080/~jody

I'm also interested in any comments or questions you have about any
aspect of my research.

Thanks for participating. And thanks again if you have already
participated.
