Following up on this very brief discussion of the original Slavic names
for months, let me point out that a fairly interesting paper on this
question was given by Don Reindl at the 9th Biennial Conference on
Balkan and South Slavic Linguistics, Literature, and Folklore (whew!) in
April, 1994. I believe the paper is to appear in the journal Slovene
Studies. Reindl surveys the systems in a variety of Slavic languages,
with particular reference to Slovene, and looks into the
sociolinguistics of switching to Latin-based names.
