Rhetorex cards can indeed produce linear data, but it isn't 16 bit; it 
scales to 12 bit (that is, the values are 0-4095) and I've heard that 
it's really 9-bit accuracy: the least significant 3 bits are always zero.

Actually, the most help would be from a higher sampling rate; we can make 
do with U-law if necessary.

I do agree that the public phone system is limited to 8 KHz, as the 
signal is digitised at that rate for transmission - however, we're 
intending to stick to calls within the local PBX, which should all remain 
in the analog domain. I didn't make that point clear originally; sorry.

Does anyone have a contact number for this Bicom vendor suggested by Nick?
