Due to the nature of CDMA, fixed-rate or variable-rate vocoders can be used.  I know Qualcomm believes strongly in their variable-rate vocoder and its ability to provide high quality speech.  

My question is, could a variable-rate vocoder be used in a TDMA system as well?  
My experience with variable-rate vocoders is very limited.  I did receive the Qualcomm demo tape (very poor recording) and I believe I understand their definition of variable-rate, but would welcome someone to define exactly what a ``variable-rate vocoder'' really is.
