	  POSITION IN MATHEMATICAL/COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS
		       CITI -- Montreal, Canada

The Center for Information Technology Innovation (CITI), a research
laboratory of the Canadian Department of Industry, invites
applications for a position as research scientist in mathematical and
computational linguistics.

DUTIES: Work in close cooperation with the other members of the CITI's
machine-assisted translation team in developing new techniques in
machine-assisted translation. The team includes computer scientists,
linguists and translators. More specifically, the employee will be
expected:

      1) to play a key role in the development of abstract translation
models of the translation process, especially with respect to
their mathematical and computational properties. The relevant
models range from classical rule-based linguistic models (ex:
unification grammars) to stochastic models (ex: Hidden Markov
Models), and are meant to provide the foundation for the
      development of a new generation of translation support tools;

      2) to participate in the implementation and testing of these
models as they are embodied in tools designed to perform tasks
such as automatic translation checking, automatic transcription
of spoken translations and, in the longer term, automatic
      translation of simple texts.

      3) publish the results of his/her research; monitor the relevant
      literature.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants should have a Ph.D. in applied mathematics or
computer science or possess a proven track record of high-quality
research in these areas. Some previous research experience in
computational linguistics would be an important asset, as would
experience in computer programming using languages such as C, Lisp and
Prolog . While a good knowledge of both French and English would be
desirable, an excellent knowledge of either language would be
sufficient.

TERMS: The position is open for an initial term of three years with
the possibility of renewal. The CITI is located in Laval, a suburb of
Montreal. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, as assessed
by a ministerial committee responsible for the evaluation of research
scientists. Priority will be given to Canadian citizens, but all
applications will be considered.

Applicants should send a detailed resume and a small sample of their
recent scientific production (article, tech. reports, etc) before
November 15, 1994 to:
