I've had _excellent_ personal results in e-mail support from MathWorks.
As to the GDI "bug", it really is the fault of the Windows and/or your video
driver. If you want MATLAB to work-around it, it will have to ask you about
your hardware configuration when you load it, the MathWorks staff will
spend all their time doing custom video from one set of hardware to the next,
and every time you upgrade a piece of hardware (like a video card or
printer), you'll need to tell Windows about it, as well as MATLAB and
any other software that accesses the video bypassing the OS.

All these things _should_ be handled by the OS, not by the individual
application. In my experience, MS PowerPoint 2.0 was the worst consumer
of GDI's. The problem disappeared when I loaded a new (free) video
driver from ATI. Also, printer drivers with bugs sometimes don't
release all the GDI's they claim.
