VIPIR

A Research Assistant's post on a three-year University of Glasgow funded
research project VIPIR: Voice Processing for Information Retrieval, a
joint project between the Computing Science and Statistics Departments.

The aim of the project is to develop voice processing techniques which will
integrate with the storage and retrieval of documents containing images and
text. Extensive use will be made of statistical approaches, especially
the Hidden Markov Models. The research will be based on a Sun
SPARCstation running HTK and will use some Power Macs.

Preference will be given to a candidate with a PhD in information
retrieval, or equivalent experience, and with some knowledge of formal
logic, probability theory, and computer-based speech processing. The
successful candidate will join the IR group in the Computing Science
Department.

DRASTIC

A Research Assistant's post on a three-year EPSRC project is available in a
group developing a high-performance distributed software platform, suitable
for supporting very large, evolving, resilient, heterogeneous, persistent
application systems. The research group has been involved in building
persistent object stores, persistent languages and distributed object
managers for more than a decade. The research will use a mixture of
Digital's Alpha workstations and Sun's SPARCstations; both companies are
collaborating with this project.

Preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience and/or a
PhD in relevant systems research topics. Evidence will be required of
experience in designing and implementing systems software.

The DRASTIC and VIPIR projects are situated in a large and thriving
department with a research rating of 5 and an Excellent teaching rating.
Both appointments will be made on the RA 1A scale (13,941 - 20,953) with
USS superannuation. Applications should be submitted no later than 30
September 1994 by e-mail to vacancies@dcs.glasgow.ac.uk (from whom further
particulars may be obtained) or on paper to Anne Sinclair, Department of
Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, G12 8RZ. These should
include a full CV (four copies), publication list and the addresses of two
referees.
