POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE 1 SEPTEMBER 1994
IN HAPTIC PATTERN AND SPEECH PERCEPTION

A postdoctoral position is currently available on an
NIH-funded project on haptic perception of multidimensional
patterns including speech. The research has two focus areas:
1) designing dynamic haptic stimuli based on speech-derived
parameters; and 2) basic studies of dynamic haptic pattern
perception. These investigations are built around a new
computer-controlled haptic stimulator that can move the
fingers along motion trajectories and also stimulate the
skin with vibrational patterns. An applied goal of the work
is to develop displays for communication by deaf and deaf-blind
people. Another area we are addressing is haptic interfaces
for virtual worlds.

Applicants are invited with background in speech perception
and knowledge of speech signal processing. Experience in the
areas of tactile or haptic perception, and/or cross-modal
speech perception would be helpful. Applicants must have
a Ph.D. Knowledge of or willingness to learn sign language
is required.

Send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, three letters of
recommendation, and reprints or recent publications to:
